Hullo Atuldom
18th August is the date of birth of two veterans/ stalwarts of Hindi Films for whom the adjective “Legends” is perfect.
Stalwart/ Veteran number (1) is poet/ lyricist Sampooran Singh Kalra a.k.a. Gulzar. The poet/ lyricist has a way with words.
For example: in the song ‘Do Deewane Shehar Mein’ he wrote the line ‘ASMANI rang ki aankhon mein’. He meant ‘sky-blue eyes’. But I have learnt recently that ‘ASMANI’ can also mean celestial/ heavenly. That explains why the lady asks “Asmani yaa aasmani”; she may also have thought that the guy had made a mistake and used ‘Asmani’ instead of ‘Aasmani’.
Another example: in the song ‘Mera Kuchh Saamaan’ he has used a phrase ‘116 chand ki raatein’. Recently I saw a video, after which I was amazed by the play of words indulged by Gulzar sahab. This is what the video said: “It was The Math of Love: the interpretation notes that roughly four months contain about 120 nights; subtracting a few new moon (amavasya) dark nights leaves precisely 116 moonlit nights.”
So, in the letter written by the woman, leaving behind memories with her lover—it poetically symbolizes the exact, deeply cherished count of nights they spent together. INTERESTING discoveries (at least for me)
I would like to add here, that Gulzar sahab is witty too. It seems, on being questioned about how he arrived at the number ‘116’ he said he was weak in arithmetic, and he just used a random number. (This I read on one of the write ups about the poet on the internet.) But ‘ek sau solah chand ki raatein’ sounds lovely and loving.
There are numerous songs written by this Urdu poet who was also a lyricist, author, screen writer (i.e. wrote just in all forms- prose and poetry) and also a film director. We all know that he has had a long career in films, that started in 1960s. Today he turns 92.
Stalwart/ Veteran number (2) is Aruna Irani. She has acted in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Punjabi films. I remember seeing her in a dance number in the Tamil remake of ‘Deewar’ – the Rajnikanth starrer ‘Thee’ (1981). Here is the Tamil song (Vaare Vaa Idhu). The song, in the similar situation in ‘Deewar’ was (Koi mar jaaye kisi pe).
Like most of those who made films their career, and later their life-long love, Aruna Irani also entered the industry to support her family of which she was the eldest of eight children. She had to discontinue her studies due to financial constraints. She is a graceful dancer who learnt the art while working in films. She is said to have been 10 or 11 when she made her debut in films through ‘Ganga Jumna’ in 1961. She has been entertaining us ever since. We often see her on television these days playing a gamut of characters- recently Doordarshan has started a serial ‘Zamaana Badal Gaya 2’ which is a sequel to her popular serial of the same name of 1995. Aruna Irani plays a grandmother in the new series. We can also see her occasionally, as a special guest, in reality dance and singing shows.
Last year, around this time, I googled to find if there were any songs written by Gulzar, that had Aruna Irani onscreen. The closest that google pointed out was “Angoor” which was a Gulzar written and directed film where Aruna Irani played an important character; she didn’t have any song to lip-sync.
I am not one to give up easily, is what people who know me tell. I googled again this morning. And Google came up with a movie called “O’ Romeo”.
“O’ Romeo” was a Sajid Nadiadwala production which was written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It released on 13th February 2026, to coincide with Valentines day. Going by what I have read about the film on the internet, it was an action, crime, drama, romance themed movie with Mumbai’s underworld as the setting for the story.
Shahid Kapoor, Tripti Dimri, Avinash Tiwari, Nana Patekar, Farida Jalal as the main cast. Vikrant Massey, Tamannah Bhatia, Disha Patani and Aruna Irani were present in special appearance. Vishal Bhardwaj was the music director who used the voices of Javed Ali, Badshah, Rekha Bhardwaj, Shreya Ghoshal, Jubin Nautiyal, Neeraj Shridhar, Sukhwinder Singh, Yo Yo Honey Singh as the principal singers for the songs of the film.
Until recently, there was a category of singers called ‘Chorus’. I find that films of this decade actually name every singer involved in a song in the end credits of the films under headings of backing vocalist/ choir/ vocals singer etc. I think this is a welcome change.
In the song with this post we see Shahid Kapoor breaking into a song on the streets of Bombay (that was what it was till sometime in the 1990s). He is later joined by Disha Patani and a whole lot of young and old ladies; prominent among them being Aruna Irani. It is wonderful to see her dance given her age. She claims she is 80 but that is not believable when one sees her on screen full of life and pep. I am sure she must only be 76 or 77 considering she was 10 or 11 at the time of ‘Ganga Jumna’.
The song has playback by Sukhwinder Singh & Rekha Bhardwaj. The song has ‘Niche Paan ki Dukaan’ in its mukhda. The first time I heard that phrase was in ‘Silsila’ in a scenes that showed the brotherly bonding of Shashi Kapoor & Amitabh Bachchan.
Song-Neeche paan kee dukaan (O’Romeo)(2026) Singers-Sukhwinder Singh, Rekha Bhardwaj, Lyricist-Gulzar, MD-Vishal BhardwajChorus
