Today’s song is the last and final song from the Murder Mystery film Main Wohi Hoon-1966.
It was a M.M.Production fim and was directed by A.Shamsheer. Music was by Usha Khanna for songs written by Asad Bhopali. The cast included Firoz Khan, Kumkum,I.S.Johar, Bela Bose, Madan Puri, Murad and many others.
The year 1966 provided wholesome entertainment catering to all tastes, Genres and all age groups, Males and Females, Young and Old, Rich and Poor etc. Some of the famous films made in 1966 were Phool aur Pathar, Teesri manzil, Aakhri Khat, Dadi Maa, Do badan, Mera Saaya, Dus lakh, Love in Tokyo, Pyar kiye Jaa, Suraj, Anupama (my favourite), Biwi aur makan, Bahare phir bhi aayengi, Aaye din Bahar ke, Teesri kasam, Gaban, Amrapali, Dulhan ek raat ki etc etc.
Lyricist Shailendra and Director Bimal Roy left for heaven. Shankar- Jaikishen’s efforts ended the dispute between Lata and Rafi on the issue of Royalty. They sang a duet for the film Palkon ki Chhaon mein, which had a delayed release only in 1977.
1966 was the year when I used to see selected Hindi films. Somehow, for being a Murder Mystery, I saw this film in a local theatre and was totally disappointed. Firstly, I never liked Firoz Khan. Once I had read in a film magazine that he was very proud of being a Muslim Pathan and considered all other Muslims in India impure. I don’t like such people. Seeing his film for the first time, further enhanced my dislike for him and I never ever saw another film.
Apart from that the story was nothing special and such stories have to be handled deftly. However, the director can not change the story and thus the Murder mystery became predictable and diluted. The songs were also not that good. After her first film,Usha Khanna never gave very popular songs-with some exceptions, ofcourse.
I don’t remember the story in detail, but here is the full story provided by our Sadanand Kamath ji in one of his posts……
Vijay (Feroz Khan) has recently got a job as an Engineer and Ashok (I S Johar) is his friend who talks more like an investigator to him because he is a private detective by profession. Vijay has no time to listen to him as he is to attend a birthday party of his girlfriend, Asha (Kumkum), the only daughter of a wealthy Rai Saheb (Murad). Somewhere else also, Jagdish (Madan Puri) and Rajan (Roopesh Kumar) are also separately getting ready to attend Asha’s birthday bash with an intention to propose Asha. At the birthday party, Asha does not give them that opportunity as she is eagerly waiting for the arrival of her sweetheart, Vijay. But Jagdish meets Rai Saheb to give him a business proposal for partnership with him.
As the birthday party is going on, Rai Saheb speaks to his close friend, Dosani (Mirza Musharraf) with a locked door and reveals that he has consented Asha’s choice of Vijay and he is going to make the announcement of their engagement shortly. As he is still in talks with his friend, Rai Saheb is shot by an unidentified assailant who escapes by picking some papers from his desk. Rai Bahadur continues his telephonic talk with Dosani in a very feeble voice to inform him that a list of guests is lying in Patna, before he dies.
The police investigation starts with his daughter Asha, who was the last person to meet him and also she had closed his chamber’s door when he was still in his chamber as per his instruction. Surprisingly, she is not ready to reveal that she has got the key to the chamber. On the contrary, she throws the key somewhere out. This has been watched by and her action has been watched by a man who starts blackmailing her on many occasions for the money. Police also questioned Dosani with whom Rai Saheb was talking before getting shot dead. However, Dosani is not able to recollect what Rai Saheb said before he died because of his very feeble voice. The possible suspects in the murder of Rai Saheb are three suitors for Asha who would be the beneficiary of his inheritance if they get married to her. However, in the absence of any circumstantial evidence, police refrain from arresting anyone in the case.
As a part of the comic subplot, Ashok, the private detective suspects Bimla (Bela Bose), Asha’s friend who was present during the birthday bash. She later becomes his love interest. At one point of time, he explains to Bimla through a graphic chart on a black board that according to him, except Dosani, all others who have met Rai Saheb are suspects. Ashok has also found out that during the last one month, Asha has withdrawn Rs.40000/- from her bank account. Vijay thinks that Asha is being blackmailed by someone. On the last two occasions, Vijay is able to apprehend the persons sent to collect the money from Asha but he is unsuccessful as to who is behind her blackmailing. Vijay tries in a hard way to force Asha to reveal as to why she is being blackmailed. He even threatens her that he will have to break his relationship with her because he has started suspecting her to be a part of her father’s murder. In between, Vijay keeps informing the police of these developments.
Asha is in a dilemma. She cannot reveal the truth to Vijay for the reasons best known to her. But in these circumstances, she is afraid Vijay may keep distance from her. One night, when she was pondering about her tragic life, a man enters her room and threatens to kill Vijay if she does not reveal to him as to where are those missing papers which the killers had taken with him. He gives her 24 hours of time to reveal. Actually, she is not aware of any papers. After the expiry of the period, the man comes back with the intention of killing Asha suffocating her with a scarf but Vijay who has been keeping a watch over her house, saves her with his timely intervention. Now, Asha seems to be in two minds whether or not reveal to Vijay the truth about her blackmailing.
In the meanwhile, a hint from his office assistant (Lata Sinha) about her guests, Dosani suddenly remembers that Rai Saheb had told him about a guest list lying in Patna. Vijay starts searching for the list and finds it in Rai Saheb’s library inside the pages of the book titled ‘Patna’. He shares the list with police which gives the clue as to who was behind the murder of Rai Saheb. However, in the absence of concrete evidence, police refrain from disclosing the name and they are looking to collect the evidence. At last, Vijay finds the gun which was used in firing shots at Rai Bahadur.
With this news out, the henchmen of the man behind the murder kidnap Asha and take her to some remote place to trap Vijay. As usual, Vijay has noticed the movements. The last 30 minutes of the film covers the sequences of car chasing, fighting with henchmen, both on the ground and in the train followed by henchmen running after Vijay and Asha and finally being overpowered by them. Both are brought to a remote house and they are confined in a closed room to die of the poisonous smoke. The police forces reach and surround the house. After some gun battle with the police, the brain behind the murder of Rai Saheb is arrested, who is none other than Dosani, Rai Saheb’s friend. Vijay and Asha get released. Dosani reveals to the police that Rai Bahadur knew the business secret of Dosani which he was to reveal to the police on the day of Asha’s birthday bash because of which he would have been arrested.
The Heroine of this film was Kumkum. I always liked her from her first appearance in a song in the film Aarpaar-1954. Kumkum (born Zaibunnisa Khan; 8 June 1938 – 28 July 2020) was best known for her roles in Ankhen (1968), Lalkaar (1972), Mother India (1957), Mr. X in Bombay (1964), Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), Son of India (1962), Kohinoor (1960), Ujala, Naya Daur, Shreeman Funtoosh, Ek Sapera Ek Lutera, Ganga Ki Laharen, Raja Aur Runk, Geet and Ek Kuwara Ek Kuwari. She paired with many film heroes of her era and was popular in roles alongside Kishore Kumar.
Kumkum also acted in Bhojpuri films, starting with Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1963), which was also the first ever Bhojpuri film.
Kumkum’s birth name was Zaibunnisa. As per a tribute post to her by her daughter Andaleeb Khan following her demise on 28 July 2020, Kumkum was born on 8 June 1938. She was born in a Shia Islam family to Sayyed Manzoor Hassan Nawab of Hussainabad in Sheikhpura district of Bihar and Sayyeda Khursheeda Bano.
Kumkum married Sayyed Sajjad Akbar Khan who hailed from Lucknow, India and worked in Saudi Arabia. Kumkum shifted to Saudi Arabia after her marriage and returned to India after 23 years in 1995. The couple have only one child— Sayyeda Andaleeb Sajjad Khan (daughter).
Kumkum was discovered by Guru Dutt. Guru Dutt had picturized the song “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar Laaga Teere Nazar” for his movie Aar Paar (1954) on his friend Jagdeep (father of Javed Jaffery, Naved Jaffery), but later decided to picturize this song on a female actor. But at that time, no one agreed to do a small song. Then Guru Dutt finally picturized this song on Kumkum. Later, Kumkum was seen in a small role in Pyaasa (1957). The famous song “Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan” from C.I.D (1956), sung by Geeta Dutt was picturized on her. She was also paired alongside Shammi Kapoor in a side role in Mem Saheb (1956) and also in lead opposite Shammi Kapoor in Char Dil Char Raahein (1959). She became the first heroine to be cast opposite Dharmendra in his debut film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960.
She was trained in Kathak by the noted Pandit, Shambhu Maharaj. She showed her dancing talents in the film Kohinoor (1960) with Dilip Kumar. “Madhuban Mein Radhika Nache Re” and “Haye Jaadugar Qaatil, Haazir Hai Mera Dil”, sung by Asha Bhosle for Naushad were picturized on Kumkum. She was paired opposite Kishore Kumar in films like Ganga Ki Laharen, Shreeman Funtoosh, Haaye Mera Dil and Mr. X in Bombay. She was leading heroine in all-time favorite Hindi Sad song “mere mehboob kayamat hogi” from Mr.X in Bombay. This was a science fiction movie of that time and Kumkum was a great star. The songs like “Khoobsurat Haseena” from Mr. X in Bombay, “Ijazat Ho Toh” from Haaye Mera Dil, “Sultana Sultana” from Shreeman Funtoosh and “Machalti Hui” from Ganga Ki Lahren, which were picturized on the pair Kishore-Kumkum remains popular since their release to this day.
Kumkum was a favorite choice for writer director Ramanand Sagar. Sagar decided to cast Kumkum as Dharmendra’s sister in Ankhen, a super hit film of 1968. In 1970, for Geet, Kumkum was Ramanand Sagar’s choice for a small role. In the 1972 hit film Lalkar, she was one of the four main leads and was paired opposite Dharmendra. Kumkum was paired with Kiran Kumar in Jalte Badan (1973), produced, directed and written once again by Sagar. She was paired opposite Vinod Khanna in Dhamkee in 1973 and the duet song “Chand Kya Hai Roop Ka Darpan” became hugely popular. She was paired opposite Pran in the comedy film Ek Kuwara Ek Kuwari, directed by Prakash Mehra, which was a blockbuster.
After her marriage, Kumkum left the industry. Kumkum was one of the top stars in the first phase of Bhojpuri films which began with Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1962). In his book, Cinema Bhojpuri, Avijit Ghosh writes that she also acted in Laagi Nahi Chhute Ram (1963), Balma Bada Nadaan (1964), Naihar Chhutal Jaye (1964), Bhauji (1965) and Ganga (1965), which was also her home production. “Two heroines who ruled the first phase of Bhojpuri films were Kumkum and Naaz. Scripts were often written around their characters and to their credit, they often proved equal to the task,” Ghosh writes in the same book. her younger sister Radha was also an actress.
Kumkum died on 28 July 2020 at her residence in Mumbai, aged 86.
