6th October is the birthdate a very handsome talented actor who could have fallen in the category of “SUPERSTAR” too, if he had not just given it all up to follow his spiritual Guru just as his career was on the upswing. He was an actor who could dance without making the audience feel that he was uncomfortable, I have seen him match steps with HEMA MALINI & Kalpana Iyer in the 1980s. He was introduced into Hindi films in Sunil Dutt’s ‘Man Ka Meet’ in a supporting role in 1968. He played supporting characters to Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar etc. in his initial films. He didn’t flinch from playing characters that had grey or negative traits- he was good in action sequences too.
His first leading role was in Gulzar’s directorial debut ‘Mere Apne’. He experienced stardom & success in the late 1970s and was seen playing solo protagonist in films like ‘Inkaar’, ‘Shaque’ (to name just two, there are many). He held his own in multi-starrers too; that is also a very long list. I would like to mention that he was repeated by al the filmmakers of that time- Feroz Khan, Sunil Dutt, Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai, Raj Khosla etc.

Let us have a song from the 1977 release “Aap Ki Khatir”. The song has Sagar (Vinod Khanna), a taxi driver in Bombay, singing about his ladylove to a very excited and appreciative passenger Piloo Wadia. The film was the story of Sagar & Sarita (Rekha) who are in love. But, Sagar’s father (Murad) is not supportive as Sarita is from a lower economic background, as compared to Sagar. Sagar defies his father & marries Sarita and gives up his claim on all the ‘Shaan aur shaukat’ and drives the Taxi during the day, attends evening classes at college and romances his wife at other times. Sagar & Sarita are invited to dinner by his brother (Om Shivpuri) and Bhabhi (Sonia Sahni) which is the trigger point for the film’s story to takeoff.
Sarita realizes all that Sagar has sacrificed for her, so she decides to rectify matters by trying to earn some extra money to help ease the burden on Sagar. At first, she takes a loan from her uncle (Janakidas), gives it to her husband and asks him to invest in stock market. Next, she tries to earn money by doing some gainful business from her home & gets embroiled with a madam (Nadira) who sends clients to her apartment. What follows are humorous incidents where we see Sarita avoiding contact with her male clients.
“Aap Ki Khatir” had music by Bappi Lahiri with Kishore Kumar, Usha Mangeshkar, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, & Bappida (himself) giving playback to the 6 songs. Shaily Shailendra was the lyricist. The film was produced by Harsh Kohli & directed by Sudhendu Roy who was also a well known art director & production designer active in the film industry since the 1940s.
