The 1960 film ‘Chhabeeli’ is not well remembered or talked about much. It was planned as the launch vehicle for Tanuja, by her mother Shobhna Samarth. Whatever else may have been the performance and success factors of the film otherwise, there is one aspect that is unique and significant about this film. Which also makes one wonder about the peculiarities of the cinema world, and its stereotyping. The film has a very delightfully mesmerizing song – “Ae Mere Hamsafar, Rok Apni Nazar” , which is sung by Nutan herself under the music direction of Snehal Bhatkar. This song, along with another equally mesmerizing duet of Nutan and Hemant Kumar – “Lehron Pe Lehar, Ulfat Hai Jawaan” , make this film and its music worth remembering. Both the music director and the lyricist, a gentleman by the name S Ratan, have excelled in this creating these two songs. And the rendering of these songs by Nutan – ah, that is just a class by itself.
