Though Kishore Kumar is known for being a fun loving individual, he tended to make serious movies as a producer (with the exception a few movies e.g. “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”). “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” (1964) was a serious movie which was a labour of love for Kishore Kumar. Serious labours of love like this movie did not have too many takers among movie goer those days and such movies tended to flop at the box office. This movie too failed at the box office.

Today (28th may), which happens to be the birthday of music director Vinod gives me a good reason to discuss a few songs composed by him. Vinod, whose real name was Eric Robert was born on 28th may 1922 at Lahore. He came to Bombay in late 1940s alongwith Roop K Shorey. Vinod composed music in about 32 Hindi movies and a few Punjabi movies. He was one of the pioneers of Hindi movie music during its formative years. He was one of those who used western music as well as Hinglish lyrics in his compositions at a time when such compositions were not quite in vogue.

And mind you, this recognition is voted for by the MTV audience, a population that primarily consists of teen agers. At an age when most people in many walks of life are either retired or contemplating a more relaxed and sedate life, this diva of Hindi film music, went on to completely reinvent herself. At the age of 64, with a new makeover, she rose once again to become the queen of funky pop.
