The star cast included Premnath, Meena Kumari, Ulhas, Mehmood, Minoo Mumtaz, Sheila Vaz, Niranjan Sharma, Hiralal, Anjali Devi, Kuldeep Kaur, Radheshyam, Bhudo Advani, Bhagwan Sinha, Radheshyam, Jennifer etc. Originally, Ajit was the lead actor for the film which he left when the film was under production and Premnath stepped in his place.

We are in the month of November. This month sees a few beautiful ladies, who were crowned Miss India & also, who went on to grace the Silver Screen of Bollywood celebrate their birthdays. I am sure there would have been such beauties gracing other industries of regional cinema too, but my mind is a stuck on the Miss India/s of Hindi Films. “Agar abhee naa to phir kabhee naa …” that is what I thought on listening to this today’s song. Since I want to see it here on the blog as early as possible, I am sharing it a couple of days after I came across it. This song is from the movie ‘Chor Ho To Aisaa-1978’. The music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. So, this is the third movie after ‘Jeewanmukt-1973’, and ‘Ujaalaa Hi Ujaalaa-1974’ where the music for the movies was composed by R.D Burman and they were missing from the blog till I introduced them here. I was under the impression that all movies, at least from the ‘seventies’’ where music composer was R.D. Burman have already got represented on the blog. That is why it comes as a surprise whenever I come across R.D. Burman of 1970s that are not yet represented in the blog.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.
There was a film in 1937 also with the same title. The story of both the films were on similar lines. But do you know what the meaning of the word Guru Ghantal is ? I did not know, but I found out from a Hindi-English dictionary, published in 1889. This was compiled by ” The Rev. T.Craven, M.A.”, in Lucknow. Many years ago, I had a habit of roaming on the streets of big cities like Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta or even smaller cities like Poona, Lucknow or Hyderabad, in search of second hand old and rare books. I found this dictionary of Hindi-English-Hindi and Urdu-English-Urdu words for sale in Lucknow. It was quite a thick book and occupied considerable space in my suitcase. The book is extremely useful and I have to use it very carefully because, being so old-135 years- its pages have become brittle and delicate. It is one of my prized possessions !

Today’s song is from an obscure film Deep Jalta Rahe-1959.
I said ‘obscure film’ because no one remembers this film today. Actually this film was made by a well known banner like Filmistan, it was directed by a skilled director like Datta Dharmadhikari, music was by Roshan and the cast too had good actors. Still, the film remained a flop at the Box office. The reason was its story. The mid 50’s onwards the period was when the people looked at the films as entertainment with lilting music. This film had neither of these. Perhaps the makers forgot that films with a tragic end, separation of lovers and a weak story by current standards was not accepted by the audience.

In this article, I have taken up for discussion, one of the unreleased films, ‘Sameera’ (1982) which was initially titled ‘Wohi Baat’ when it went to floor for shooting in 1977. The film was jointly produced by Cinematographer, K K Mahajan and the Film Editor, Pran Mehra and was directed by debutant, Vinay Shukla. The main actors in the films were Shabana Azmi, Parikshit Sahni, Mithun Chakraborty and Amol Palekar.
