‘Mr Yogi’ (1989), directed by Ketan Mehta was one of a few Doordarshan Serials which I had watched its all the 13 episodes when it was telecast. The very first episode set the tone of the serial to be a light comedy and satirical one. It is a story about an NRI from USA, (played by the late Mohan Gokhale) who has come to India to choose a bride for himself. In his quest, he meets 12 girls of 12 different zodiac signs which results in some comical situations. There were a couple of medleys of popular Hindi film songs of 1960s and 70s in this TV serial. In the end, he rejects all the 12 girls but gets hooked to an unknown girl (Subhangi Gokhale, who became Mohan Gokhale’s real wife). The serial was based on a Gujarati novel, ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, written by an American Gujarati, Madhu Rye (real name: Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker).

Happy birthday to Biswajeet (born December 14, 1936), the ‘chocolate hero’ of the 1960s on completing 87 years of age today. Kolkata born Biswajeet got his first break in a Bengali film, ‘Kangsha’ (1958). By 1962, he did about a dozen Bangla films before he shifted to Mumbai.

‘Film Hi Film’ (1983), was produced by Shahab Ahmed and was directed by Hiren Nag. The film starred Pran in a role of a film producer with Seema Deo as his wife and Ramesh Deo as his Secretary. Rest of the cast consisted of Raj Kishor, Birbal, Mohan Choti, Pandit Iqbal, Mulchand, and the new faces, Furqan, Bipin, Sonia and Beena. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Kamaleshwar. It was a novel idea to incorporate scenes and songs from some of the incomplete/shelved films of 1950s, 60s and 70s into the story of the film.

I had discussed in my earlier articles, a couple of lesser-known actors like Shaam Kumar and Keshav Rana, who have worked in a large number of films but mostly remained unidentified for the general film audience. But their faces were known to them even though they may appear in the films in small roles or sidekicks. One of such actors was Kamal Mehra.

Hullo Atuldom

Like they say in some sponsored programs, I shall also say:- today’s song has been selected with the help of my daughter who is known as Peevesie to the followers of the blog. (I always feel we should acknowledge all those who help us). She is the one who pointed out that the director of the film (Paheli 2005) from which today’s song is, was someone who tried his hand at films which didn’t have the regular run-of-the-mill stories.

Producer-director-writer, Basu Chatterjee is one of the earliest filmmakers who brought up middle-class related issues on the big screen with films like ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969), ‘Piya Ka Ghar’ (1971), ‘Rajnigandha’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979) and many more. He has also made film with other genres of which ‘Kamla Ki Maut’ (1989) was critically acclaimed. But the film failed at the box office. He went back to his favourite genre of middle class family drama with light comedy, and made for Doordarshan a telefilm, ‘Hamaari Shaadi’ (1990). About 3 months back, Doordarshan uploaded the film in digital format on one of the video sharing platforms, with improved audio-visual quality.

Azamgarh district lies in the Purvanchal part of Uttar Pradesh (UP) which is identified by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj as one of the 34 backward districts of UP. In the absence of medium and large industries in the district, the main source of income for the inhabitants is from the agricultural and allied activities. So, the size of the landholdings becomes a crucial part in generating income for the landowners. With the divisions in the large-sized joint families, most of the landholdings have got fragmented. Hence, there is motivation for those who continue to stay in the district to augment their landholdings, if necessary, by dubious ways, especially from the close relatives who have migrated to cities and have become the absentee landowners. One of the dubious ways of grabbing the land is to bribe the district revenue officials to declare the absentee landowners dead and grab their lands.

There is a saying in Hindi – भगवान जब देता है,तो छप्पर फाड़कर देता है. This saying is used in the context of unexpected gains, not necessarily in terms of monetary gains but in any form. For example, this saying applies to a farmer who gets a bumper crop in the backdrop of the loss of crops due to drought or floods in the preceding one or two years. This saying also applies to Sujoy Ghosh when his low budget film, ‘Kahaani’ (2012) earned a bumper box office collections after his preceding two films – ‘Home Delivery’ (2005) and ‘Alladdin’ (2009) failed at the box office.
