Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 26
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

In 1963, when Sunil Dutt lip-synced the songs in the film ‘Gumrah’, that was the time when the name of a till-then-relatively-unknown singer became a household name.  And yes, it also earned him the first of his three Filmfare awards for the best male singer.  The song – “Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se Ajnabi Ban Jaayen Hum Dono”.  The singer – Mahendra Kapoor.

Remembering Mahendra ji on the anniversary of his passing away today – 27th September.

“Saaz Aur Aawaaz”(1966) was directed by Subodh Mukherji. The movie had Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu, Kanhaiya Lal, Padma, Niranajan Sharma, Asit Sen, Mumtaz etc in it.

This movie had nine songs in it. I was under the impression that all the songs of this movie were already covered in the blog, with the last song discussed in 2013 itself. Now it turns out that I had had failed in counting the songs of this movie. The fact that I had not discussed one of the songs from the movie was pointed out by H M Aparna, who takes her role of tagging YIPPEED songs very seriously and who often detects songs whose links were missing despite the songs being discussed in the past. Now she has pointed out a song from “Saaz aur Aawaaz”(1966) which I had actually failed to discuss and still I had painted the title of this movie orange declaring that all nine songs of the movie were discussed.

We will discuss today a song from film Daaman-51. This song happens to be one of Lata’s favourite songs and also a Milestone song in her early career, when she was getting settled in her playback singing career. I am pleasantly surprised to note that this song still remained undiscussed here so far, thus giving me the opportunity to discuss this song now.

Today (17 july 2015) is the 96th birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar (17 july 1919-29 may 2007). His actual name was Vasudev Gangaram Bhatkar but he composed music under various names viz. Vasudev, B.Vasudev, Snehal and V.G.Bhatkar and finally settled for the name of Snehal Bhatkar, where the name Snehal was derived from Snehlata, the name of his daughter ! He used these pseudo names because he was an employee of HMV and his contract with HMV prohibited him from working outside HMV.

“Chaand” songs are always a delight to listen to. In my view, the first “Chaand” song was perhaps the title song of “Chaand”(1944) which I discovered some four years ago. I had discussed this song in the blog at that time.

There are only a handful of Bollywood numbers from movies made after mid-1960s that I really long to hear. Lest I may be misunderstood, this is a statement of personal preference by this music-illiterate, not necessarily an adverse commentary on the later years’ work.
