A few days ago, on Shakeel Badayuni’s birth anniversary, Atul wrote a post paying tribute to him. In that post, Atul did a thorough analysis of how this blog has covered Shakeel saab. He analysed it by composer and further, by film. It made for very interesting reading.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

We all know the meaning of the word “Bhaand”; for those not conversant with colloquial Hindi; googling the word throws up meanings —Clown, Mimic, Comedian etc. “Bhaands” are also traditionally folk entertainers which might mean a storyteller, minstrels, dancers, actors, impressionists etc. Most bhaands belong to families that are engaged in folk entertainment as their hereditary profession, their specific art forms vary greatly by region, community and language. The term bhaand itself can also mean either a specific dramatic story or an entire form/school of drama.

The cast included Motilal, Shyama, Moti Sagar, Shakila, Kesri, Noor, S K Prem, Amina Bai, Radheshyam etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 22
———————————————————

Music and songs are integral parts of films made in the Indian sub-continent. Even before talkies came into being, musicians used to play musical instruments sitting close to the screen. Sometime recorded songs were played as film’s images got projected on the screen in the silent film era. The main reason as to why music and songs contents in films of Indian sub-continent are comparatively high as compared with those of films of other countries is that we are musically inclined people in our day to day life. Joy, sorrow, romance, seasons, activities, festivals etc are occasions for music and songs for us. Our folk music and songs are testimony to the importance of music in our life.
