So I have been trying to get the words of this Gulzar number for the last one year. Hope I have got it right. Actually I began writing it for Gulzar’s birthday last year and then found that there are too many words coming out of Roop Kumar Rathod who had to keep up in pace with Nana Patekar’s style of speaking. So I let go of the song last time. And sent another song Itna lamba kash lo yaaron from the same movie. Then I had completely forgotten the whole thing.

Shammi Kapoor got branded as the ‘rebel star’ after the success of his film ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957). In this film, for the first time, he moved away from the conventional type of acting set by the big three of his time – Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor and developed his own style of acting. Almost around the same time, Sahir Ludhianvi also got tagged as the ‘rebel poet’ after the phenomenon success of the films ‘Pyaasa’ (1957). The streak of ‘rebelliousness’ in Sahir was confirmed when the songs of ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ (1958) became hit though the film did not get as much success at the box office as was expected. Both these films have been known for Sahir’s hard hitting lyrics on the deprivation of minimum standard of living for the lower strata of the society.

I have seen the movie Sautela Bhai (1962) many years ago on Doordarshan, and have remembered it for a very strong performance by Guru Dutt. It is a family drama, based on the story of two step brothers. Guru Dutt, the elder, is a responsible and values oriented person. The younger one is an irresponsible weakling, who has a bevy of crooked friends around him. The storyline moves on a very predictable track, with a happy ending.
