Genius of Jaidev – 53

1971 colored social film ‘Ek Thi Reeta was produced by International Films, Bombay and was directed by Roop K Shorey. I am not repeating the star-cast as they were presented in all earlier six songs.

One of the more easily recognizable figures on the Hindi film screen. There are two hallmark identifications, with which we can easily pick out Asit Sen (the actor). The first one is his size. It is remarkable that he maintained his figure through the entirety of his career. One can see him in his earliest appearances in films like ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, playing the role of a seller of sweets and savories, and then also see him in films after three decades – ‘Mera Karam Mera Dharam’ (1987), playing the role of school headmaster. There is no change in his physique. For the number of years one sees him on screen in the same physical dimensions, the thought almost comes into the mind – maybe this is how he was born. 🙂

In the 1950s, many new female singers joined Hindi film industry to try their luck in making their careers in playback singing. Many of them went into oblivion after a couple of years or so. Playback singing career of a few of them like Seeta Kalyanpur, Suman Purohit ended with one or two films. A few others like Meenal Wagh (11 songs during 1950-54), Kaumudini Munshi (10 songs during 1954-68) could remain connected with Hindi film music for longer period but their singing output was low. While some of them may not have pursued the playback singing career due to personal reasons, there is no doubt about the fact that with the emergence of Lata Mangeshkar in early 50s along with established playback singers like Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum, the newcomers faced tough competition from them.

A few days ago, on Shakeel Badayuni’s birth anniversary, Atul wrote a post paying tribute to him. In that post, Atul did a thorough analysis of how this blog has covered Shakeel saab. He analysed it by composer and further, by film. It made for very interesting reading.

Missing Films of 1960s – 25
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Back again, with another un-represented film from 1960s. The film being introduced today is ‘Ek Tha Alibaba’ from 1963. Obscure and unknown, nothing much is known about this film. Here are the details available in the Geet Kosh.

This film is listed as a fantasy film, produced under the banner of Shankar Movies. It is directed by Harbans. The film is actually a Dara Singh – Nishi starrer. The cast of actors besides the lead pair mentioned, includes Tiwari, Heeralal, Helen, Maruti, Naazi and Ram Singh. But it is strange that a Dara Singh film from 1960s is obscure. Generally, his movies are almost all available, apparently except for this one. Thankfully, the music is.
