Today’s song is from the film Shahnaaz-1948.

This film was directed by a Comedian- Shaikh and the music was by Singer/Actress Amirbai Karnataki. The cast of the film was Begum Para, Altaf, Nihal, Shanta Patel, Gulnar, Shama Dulari, Basheer , Shaikh and others. Most of the cast, except Begum Para and Altaf, was from C grade action films.

One of the interesting riddles the new “Old Film” lovers chew with interest is, who was the first woman Music Director in Hindi films. Time and again it has been proven, told, written and accepted that Bibbo aka Isharat Sultana was the First woman M.D., but still it is raised every now and then and the debate continues unabated.

Hullo Atuldom

June 22nd 1965, a young ‘approximately’ 18 year old girl, from a small town in Andhra Pradesh, got married and relocated to the metropolitan city called Bombay. After about 23 years, another young girl ‘approximately’ 22 years old, from Bombay got married & relocated to an ‘even more’ small (i.e. smaller than the Andhra Pradesh town mentioned in the opening sentence) town in Tamil Nadu. I mean a case of ‘ulti Ganga’. But we shall not talk of the second girl in this post, the subject of this post is the first girl.

Yesterday, I was watching the song, gumsum saa ye jahaan ye raat ye hawaa from the film, ‘Duniya Jhuktee Hai’ (1960). An idea came to me as to how many Hindi films songs may have the word ‘gumsum’ in the first line of the mukhda of the songs. I checked on the internet and found that over two dozen songs had the word, ‘gumsum’ in the first line of the mukhda. There may be more Hindi film songs with ‘gumsum’ but they may appear elsewhere in the songs. I selected few such songs to watch/listen. One of ‘gumsum’ songs which I heard for the first time and liked so much that I must have heard umpteen times. It is a beautifully crafted song in terms of lyrics, rendition, orchestration and the picturisation. The song is ‘gumsum kyun hai sanam o zaraa maan jaa’ from the film, ‘Bhala Maanush’ (1979) which I am presenting in this short write-up, concentrating mainly on the song. Gulshan Bawra wrote this song.

Here is this song “How Sweet Dadaji” from Saazish 1975. The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

This time, instead of presenting a solo rare song, I bring you a duet sung sweetly by Asha Bhosle and Ranu Mukharjee (daughter of Hemant Kumar).

Saazish-1975’ was directed by Kalidas for ‘Maya Movietone, Bombay’. Kalidas was also the producer of this movie. It had Saira Banu, Dharmendra, Dev Kumar, Rajendra Nath, Madan Puri, Jagdish Raj, Murad, Gayjee, David, Helen etc. Iftekhar and Paintal make special appearance in this movie.

Today’s song is from the film Roti-1942.

The early 40’s were when the Socialistic pattern of the Communist philosophy was spreading fast all over the world. Nehru was fully sold to the Socialistic pattern of Governance and he enthusiastically used to propagate it in his speeches. The film industry was in awe with the impression of Nehru and a few major filmmakers openly echoed his thinking. producers like Mehboob Khan, Kardar, Bimal Roy and some Bangla filmmakers were influenced by nehruvian philosophy.

Thus Mehboob khan ensured that most of his films reflected this anti capitalistic philosophy in some way or the others. That is how he made films like Roti, Mother India, Son of India etc. Bimal Roy too followed in his own way by making films like Naya Daur, and Dharmputra etc.

Regulars on the blog are aware that I am very fond of Qawwaalees from our Hindi films and I have been presenting them whenever I find an opportunity to do so. Also I try to bring Qawwaalee songs here that are lesser heard or never heard songs, whenever I came across such songs.
