Today’s song is from the film Pyar ki Manzil-1950.

The sudden and unexpected death of Saigal, followed by India’s partition had disturbed the entire film industry. The major centres – Calcutta and Bombay – both had benefited with the songs of Saigal. A large number of Muslim community, working in different departments of filmmaking, had migrated to Pakistan, disturbing the set up. Luckily, India had a very capable second line of talented artistes waiting in the wings. It took 2-3 years for them to show their abilities, thus the period of 1947 to 1950 was full of uncertainties and testing the new entrants.

Today’s song is from the film Pyar ki Baaten-1951.

The year 1951 was a mixed affair. After the end of II WW and especially after our Independence, there was a flood of people with Black money to produce films, earn profits and convert Black money to white money. This caused several films of low quality being made. Some of them tried to make copies of Hollywood films too. Luckily, everything wasn’t that bad and few good films also were made.

Today’s song is from the film Paak Daman-1957.

The story of this and other such same titled films was from a popular stage drama of the early 1900s. There were many versions of the story with small and big variations. The Parsi Urdu Theatre’s dramas were penned by Agha Hashra Kashmiri, known as Shakespeare of India. The Parsi Gujarati plays were written by various authors. Syed Yawar Aliu, a student of Dagh Dehlvi penned the script for the Moon Parsi Theatre. The Alfred drama company had their own version of this story.

Today’s song is from the film Talwar ka Dhani-1956.

TALWAR KA DHANI-1956 was a costume drama and also a stunt film. When I first went to see this film in its second run in 1960 or so, I thought that this must be based on the story of “King Arthur and his sword”, but I was mistaken. Probably the producers had not even heard who this Arthur was, and they based their story on Gujarat background. Appropriately, the hero was also Manhar Desai (real name Malcom Alfredo Desai, a Goan, from 3-8-17 to25-2-92), who was a Popular Hero in Gujarati and Mythological films those days.

Today’s song is from the film Daasi-1944.

This film was made by Pradhan films, Lahore.

In the Pre-Partition period, there were some important film centres like Bombay, Poona, Kolhapur, Calcutta and Lahore, as far as Hindi/Urdu films were concerned. Though comparatively Lahore was the youngest center, having made its first silent film only in 1924, experts across the border and in India claim that Lahore had the potential of becoming, if not bigger, but as big a center as Bombay ! In that era Lahore did make a lot of contribution in the field of acting, direction and music. Several experts have written long articles on Lahore’s standing in Hindi and Punjabi film making.

Today’s song is from an obscure film called Lachak-1951.

The film was produced by ShriRam Vohra, under the banner of Shree films, Bombay. It was directed by M.I.Dharamsi and the music was by Pt. Motiram. The3 title of this film is slightly misleading, causing a little confusion about the Music Director’s name.
