Today’s song is from the film Stage-1951.

The film was made by Jeevan Pictures, Bombay. The producer was G D Chandana and the film was directed by one Vijay Mhatre, who was basically a successful Cinematographer. He got an opportunity of directing a film but could not do much to make the film a Hit, despite having a popular lead pair of Dev Anand and Ramola (Khajanchi-41 fame). This was due to a very weakened run of the mill story of the film. He ended his directorial career with only this film and went back to his comfort zone of remaining a successful Cinematographer.

Today’s song is a special one. It is from the film Taxi 555-1958. The film was released on 30-11-1958 at Super Cinema in Bombay. Why I call this song a Special song is, because this song ( Diya bujhaao, jhatpat jhatpat ) is a parody of K L Saigal’s well known song ” Diya Jalaao, jagmag jagmag” from the film Tansen -1943. Of course the Parody stops only at the Mukhada of the song. The style or the tune of the rest of the song is entirely different, nevertheless the mukhada, being famous, undoubtedly reminds us of Saigal’s song.

Today’s song is from the film Majboori-1954.

The song-“Tere poojan ko Bhagwan, bana man mandir aalishan”- is a famous traditional song. Not only in a few Hindi films, but the song is also sung by many singers as NFS. No one knows how old this song is or who is the original Lyricist of this song. It is sung like a Bhajan by most people.

Today’s song is from the film Maharathi Karna-1944.

Karna is an interesting and a great character from Mahabharat. What most people know about Karna is that he was a ” Daan shoor ” or a great Donor. It is said that no one, who went to him to ask for anything, returned without getting it. There are many stories eulogizing his quality. But karna was much more than just this. He was a great Warrior. Though he was the king of Anga Desh (today’s Bihar/Bengal), he knew that he was indebted to the Kauravas for this honour.

Today’s song is from an early period costume film-His Highness-1937.

The film was made by Prakash Pictures, who were into making C grade stunt, action and Costume films, before they became famous for Religious and Mythological films in the early 40’s. There was nothing new in the film story, except that in addition to several villains, it had some animals opposing them along with good people. The film was directed by Balwant Bhatt, the elder brother of Nanubhai Bhatt-father of Mahesh Bhatt. The cast of the film was jayant, Sardar Akhtar, Shiriun bano, Umakant, Ismail, Radha, M.Zahoor and many others. There were 2 MDs. The usual MD of Prakash- Shankar Rao Vyas and Lalloobhai Naik. All the 12 songs of the film were written by Sampatlal Shrivastav ‘ Anuj’.

Today’s song is from a C grade film called Baghi Sardar (1956).

I remember once Atul ji had expressed his opinion that ‘many times the B and C grade films provide A grade music’. I tend to agree with his opinion on this issue. There are many examples of songs from costume, stunt, action and religious films which became very popular. Off hand I remember at least two songs. The first was “Zara Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye” from a religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’ (1957). It was sung by Lata and Rafi, written by Bharat Vyas and music was by SN Tripathi. This song not only became very popular, but it became the No. 1 song on Binaca Geet Mala for 4 weeks. The second was a Rafi song “Parwardigar e Aalam, Tera Hi Hai Sahara” from the film ‘Hatimtai’ (1956). There was another song also from this film”Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai Pyaar” which too became very popular. This was a costume film.

Today’s song is from the film with a funny name- Pilpili Saheb-1954.

When I saw this film’s posters in Hyderabad in 1954 , I laughed at the title of the film. I thought that the film had to do something with the yellow colour ! None of my friends knew the meaning of this word. After intense discussion, we decided to go to our Hindi teacher-Mathur sir. He was from Allahabad and was a very jovial person. He treated the students with a lot of humour and gentle talk. So we did not feel any fear or awkwardness to ask him this question. Otherwise, in those days asking such questions to any teacher was a certain invitation to caning !
