Writing is a constant search for someone who understands it. I love literature but I would like to love it a hundred times more. I am not an angry young man. I am a hungry young man. I want to learn Kannada, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu. I want to love literature in a hundred different ways. My only worry is that I cannot love it enough.
The relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and me is that of a donor and a forever unsatisfied solicitor (अतृप्त याचक).
Thus said P. L. Deshpande on his literary journey in Film’s Division’s documentary on his 60th birthday. What he said sums up his infinite love for literature.

kat gayi umr meri to mujhe pataa ye chalaa
zindagi sirf kati hai isse jiyaa hi kahaan
This is the sum and substance of a film which I propose to take up for discussion in this article.
There comes a time in every person’s life when the thought of death becomes scary especially for those who have unsatiable ambitions and desires. Taking this unusual theme, a bunch of new film makers took upon themselves of making a film, ‘Asambhava’ (1985). I came to know about this film very recently when I stumbled upon the abovementioned song from the film. Fortunately, the film is available for viewing on one of the video sharing platforms.

While going through the filmography of the music director, Vanraj Bhatia recently, I found that he had done the music composition mostly for the off-beat or ‘middle of the road’ films, including those of Shyam Benegal’s films. Among his Bollywood masala films which are few, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) was one of them which came as surprise to me because a couple of songs from the film which I had heard long back, sounded to me like that of R D Burman. The title of the film gave the hint that the story may have something to do with print media. With Naseeruddin Shah as a lead actor, I thought that the script of the film would be good for him to agree to work in the film. I watched the film a couple of days back on this assumption.

Hampi, one of the World Heritage Sites of India, was once the capital of Vijayanagar Empire in the 16th century and was the wealthiest city under the Empire. Most of the monuments had been damaged and the wealth looted by the then neighbouring sultanates in the war with Vijayanagar Empire. We had visited Hampi in January 2012 and stayed there for 4 days. Some monuments are still intact, and they are awesome so also the remains of the ruined monuments. The visit to Hampi momentarily gave us a feeling that we were in the memory lane of the Vijayanagar Empire of the 16th century as Hampi, now as a village, retains the charm of a bygone era.

The Marathi film, ‘Mee Vasantrao’ (2022) is a biopic on Dr Vasantrao Deshpande, the Hindustani classical vocalist who was reluctant to take this on the profession level during his younger days due to domestic compulsion. His close friends included P L Deshpande, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Begum Akhtar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. About a decade ago, I had watched a Marathi film, ‘Katyaar Kaljat Ghusali’ (2015) in the very first week when it was released in a multiplex. The literal meaning of the film’s title in English is ‘a dagger speared the heart’. It was near houseful crowd with an overwhelming majority being senior citizens. Probably, most of them may have watched the play in the theatre during their younger days and they may be curious to watch in the cinematic form. The film still lingers in my mind, and I have watched all its songs umpteen times. It is one of the recent viewing of the songs from the film that has prompted me to write this article.
