So there is one more film that makes its debut on the blog today. ‘Chale Hain Sasuraal’ is a film from 1966, produced under the banner of Krishnadeep Productions, directed by Dharam Kumar. A typical grade B film with Helen and Chandrashekhar in lead roles. The rest of the star cast includes Bhagwaan, Meenakshi, Madhumati, Sherry, Sunder, Tuntun, Aruna Irani, Mirza Musahrraf, Sheikh, Polson, Indira Bansal, Dilip Dutt, Jerry, Jilaani, Thakur, Anwari, Raj Deewan, Maqbool, Bimla Kashmiri, RN Nambiar. The music for this film comes from the baton of C Arjun. And the lyrics are from the pen of Qamar Jalaalabaadi.

In the long string of ‘Ustad’ films, here is one that is a new entrant for this blog. ‘Birju Ustad’ is a 1964 film from the banner of Movie Miracles, Bombay, directed by Manu Desai. The cast of actors is almost the standard fare – Sheikh Mukhtar and Chandrashekhar are in this movie. The 1965 film ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ is a veritable treasure house of wonderful songs and music. A popular hit in its own time, this film still continues to be known for the songs. Of the total of eight songs, four song are already represented on this blog. This duet here now becomes the fifth song from this film to make it here.

‘Shabistaan’ (1951) – the film that saw the sensational and tragic end of a very young and handsome star, who had broken into the popular imagination of the cinegoers just two or three years earlier. Called by some as the Eroll Flynn of Hindi cinema, Shyam was all of 31 years old when he died following the injuries sustained in a fall from horseback while shooting for this film. Historians have speculated that the course of Hindi cinema in the 1950s would have been very different, had this accident not happened.

A new film on the blog. And another one that tells us that the producers will go after some very strange names as the film title. Hollywood may have come out with films like ‘Telefon’, ‘Cellular’, ‘Phone Booth’ etc. much later. The Hindi film industry already had a film titled ‘Trunk Call’ way back in 1960. And today this film makes a debut on this blog.

‘Changez Khan’, the film from 1957, boasts of the iconic Rafi rendition “Mohabbat Zinda Rehti Hai. Mohabbat Mar Nahin Sakti”. Coming from the banner of NC films, this is a home production of Hansraj Behl and his family. The film is produced by Gulshan Behl (brother of Hansraj Behl), and is directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast is impressive and includes Premnath, Bina Rai, Sheikh Mukhtar, Johnny Walker, Jeevan, Tiwari, Leela Misra, Ramesh Thakur, Helen, Khursheed, Sandow, Jai Singh, Satpal, Bakshi, Chaman Lal, Aazam, B Saagar. The songs of this film are penned by three poets – Qamar Jalaalabaadi, Saraswati Kumar ‘Deepak’ and Verma Malik. This particular song is written by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. And yes, the music is by Hansraj Behl. The film has a total of six songs, four of which are already present on this blog. This here is a very sweet and a very lilting melody, the fifth one from this film to make it here.

Well, yes, there is a film by the name ‘Great Show of India’. Released in 1958, it is a social drama from the banner of Chitra Bharati, Bombay. By some accounts, it appears to be a story built around a circus company. I request our more knowledgeable team members and readers to please add more information about this film. The film is directed by C M Trivedi and Chandrakant. The cast of actors includes Kamini Kaushal, Mahipal, Tiwari, Maruti, Kamal Kapoor, Mirza Musharraf, Moni Chatterjee, Kamal, Jugnu, Gamdiya, Bhujbal Singh, Reva Rakshit.

Searching for and finding rarities in the world of music, is a keen and interesting pursuit. The Hindi film songs have so many variants attached to their existence. Songs that appear in film, but are not released elsewhere. Songs that are on records but not included in the film. Version songs – the official song in the film and on the record, is also available on record in the voice of a different singer. This case is different from the same song sung by more than one singer and included in the film. Then we have the variations between the song published on record and the song as picturized in the film.

One thing that we can depend upon for with Gulzar, is the most imaginative use of simple words that combine to make unusual arrangements, and still carry a very deep and pleasing meaning. A meaning that will always resonate in the mind, creating emotions of satisfaction, no matter whether the thread of feelings in the words is happy or sad. I have always been a great fan of Gulzar Sb’s poetry, the eminently simple verses that he creates to so lucidly express in such a few words, the emotions that one would be searching for words to make sense.
