Street Singer (1938) is a wonderful musical bonanza, that has two of the greatest singer-actors in it, in the person of Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi. Six songs from this movie are already posted on this blog. This is the seventh song, and what a wonderful ghazal it is. The ghazal itself is presented as a duet, and is rendered very simply, yet elegantly by Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi. A summary of the story line of this film has already been discussed in the previous two songs posted for this movie, viz., ‘Ghungharwaa baaje chhananana chhan’ and ‘Hai kyaa koi suhaawan sapnaa’. In this song, the two street singers meet the rich theatre owner for the first time – a meeting that will change their lives and destinies. The theatre owner’s role is played by Jagdeesh Sethi. (Folks can recall the film ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’ (1962), where this very person, Jagdeesh Sethi has played a role of a rich film producer who takes fancy to a street performer (Waheeda Rehman), takes her under his care, and makes her a film star. Another variant to the theme of this movie, although the 1962 creation further develops as a murder mystery).

The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.

Generally as I keep locating songs online, I keep creating a draft email on Outlook with lyrics immediately transcribed. This list is generally 15 to 20 deep and so the songs that I pick up today generally end up reaching the blog for posting about 8 to 10 days later. But sometimes I come across such a wonderful melody, or an extreme favorite that I have been waiting for long, that I am generally tempted to send it along right away. That is the case with this song. And once you hear it, I am sure you will understand my urgency for forwarding it 🙂

Music director Ajit Merchant is better known for his contributions to the Gujarati cinema and to the theatre world in Bombay. He did venture into the Hindi film world also, albeit his contribution is limited to less than 10 movies. Saperaa (1961) is one of the movies that Ajit Merchant composed music for. I have already discussed a wonderful Manna Dey solo from this movie, some days back. Here is another beautiful gem of a song from the same movie. This is a duet, that is rendered so lovingly by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics are by Indeewar. The lead roles in this movie are played by Jyoti and Ranjan. Other actors in the film are Tiwari, Jeevnkala, Sunder, Uma Dutt, Neena, Rajan Kapoor etc.

What a gem of a song ! Ghulam Mohammed at his melodious best. I am sure you will find yourself humming this song over and over after you have heard it once. That is what is happening in my mind as I am putting down the lyrics and preparing this write up, the leading lines just keep playing again and again in my mind – ‘chhodo chhodo ji piyaa mera todo na jiyaa’. What a lovely composition this one is.
