The Voice of Mukesh #23
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Wow, probably the best specimen of a ‘roothna – manaana’ song, if ever there was one. And done with such merriment and such a ticklish and playful performance by both the parties involved. I am glad the video of this song is available. Even after 66 years, the effect of this song and its visual has such a rollicking effect. I am sure you are going to love this song.

Remembering Sardul Kwatra on the anniversary of his passing away (6th July, 2005).

Sardul Kwatra – An impressive and talented composer who failed to impress, in a film world where the sheer number of artists in the 1950s and 60s made it impossible for each one to make a mark. However, in their own limited ways, such artists have left behind musical memories that are no less remarkable. And the wonder is the treasure that is hiding in the obscure, unheard songs that simply did not come to the attention of the listening public for many a reason.

The Voice of Mukesh #22
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Today I am posting the 5th song by Mukesh from the film ‘Tohfaa’ (1947). As we make progress on the trip to listening to the voice of Mukesh in some well known, and some not so well known and downright rare songs, we are now coming close to the end of the 1947 list of songs by Mukesh. After this post, only two more of his songs from 1947 are to be posted.

The Many Colors of Love #4 — Romance in Golden Years
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe. . .

“Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen”.

These first four words make an instant identification to this fabulous song that needs absolutely no introductions. The song made immortal, not just by Sahir-Ravi-Manna Da, but more so by the performance of Balraj Sahni (as Lala Kedarnath) on screen, with a coy Achla Sachdev (as Laxmi Kedarnath) getting all bashful and pink in face, realizing what a display of romanticism has been unleashed by ‘Lalaji’. A song that eventually became the signature performance for Balraj Sahni. And over the decades, the song has steadily grown on the collective minds of the people and assumed a cult status as the banner song for golden age romance. Yes, I hear this song played often at silver and golden anniversaries of marriages.

Remembering RD Burman on his 74th birth anniversary today.

RD Burman, the prince of the music composers in the 1970s and 80s, his music is considered to be the most significant factor behind the exceptional success of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar in those decades. Starting his career with ‘Chhote Nawaab’ (1961), he has no other film to his credit as a music director till 1965, when he scored the music for ‘Bhoot Bangla’ and ‘Teesra Kaun’. But the phenomenal launch to his career would be in 1966, when he scored the songs for Nasir Hussain’s ‘Teesri Manzil’ – there was no looking back after that. If we take 1965 as the true starting point in his career, then from that year to 1994, when he passed away, he had scored music for more than 330 films. In an active career of three decades, that makes for an average of more than 10 films in a year, which is an extraordinary pace for a single person.

The Voice of Mukesh #21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The year 1947 was very good for Mukesh, till then the best so far in his seven years career. In this year, he recorded a total of 21 songs in 10 films. We have so far covered 17 of his songs from this year, including all the songs from the film ‘Do Dil’ in which he sang as many as six songs.

Remembering Motilal, a great artist and a peerless actor, who departed from this world on 17th June, 1965. A vivacious personality, so full of life and friendship all his life, he passed away friendless and penniless. Another sad commentary on the state of affairs of this industry.
