Khursheed Bano ( 14/04/1914 – 18/04/2001), the singer of immortal songs such as “panchhi baawara chaand se preet lagaaye” , “ghataa ghanghor ghor” , “jiske milne ki tamanna thhi wo pyaara mil gayaa” was born as Irshad Begum near Lahore on April 14, 1914. She became an actor at a time when the era of silent movie was about to end. In the advent of talkie films when actors had to sing their own songs, she had to learn singing in furtherance of her acting career. In one of her interviews, she said that it was because of the painstaking efforts by music directors of that time that some of the actors like her could improve their singing skills.

“Moorti” (1945) is one of those movies are are so obscure that finding its songs on YT is often out of question. So it always comes as a pleasant surprise when one can locate such songs there. And I was pleasantly surprised to see this song already uploaded, though any details on this song were conspicuous by their absence. It is not that I am complaining. With such obscure songs, any small mercies will do.

I have been discussing a K L Saigal song daily in this blog and I have so far discussed 58 such songs. I have now reached a stage where almost all the K L Saigal songs uploaded on youtube have been exhausted. Now we are entering into slighly deeper waters as far as K L Saigal songs are concerned. All the songs that one tended to listen to at the stroke of 8 AM in radio Ceylon in the past decades have been covered and now the remaining K L Saigal songs are more rare as far as many listeners, including I am concerned.

I have remarked in the past that “Bhakt Surdas” (1942) is a treasure of great K L Saigal songs. Correction- It has great songs, not just by the great man, but also by the female lead of the movie. Yes, Khurshid, the female lead of this movie also shines with her singing in this movie.
