Lata Mangeshkar – 1929-2022
A lifetime of music passed by, and then today morning, that voice of the century descended into the forever sleep, from where no one returns. The fears have been there for almost a month – the time she spent in the hospital. And there were prayers also – prayers by millions – millions who have loved and revered this voice that has been singing for the past almost seventy five years. This voice will not be heard again.

‘Pehli Baar’ (First Time) is a program that is aired on a channel of the DTH service that I am subscribed to. It gives background about how some celebrities met or got together for the first time ever. Of course the incidents, and content in that program is possibly stuff that many of us have read over the years over-and-over again, and also in all the Filmfares, Screen (the magazines of yesteryear), Star & Style, Stardust, Cine Blitz etc. that were available in all the circulating libraries of those times. Stories like how Nargis had batter in her hand when she opened the door for Raj Kapoor, how Balraj Sahni saw Johnny Walker mimicking actors as he sold tickets in Mumbai’s BEST buses etc.

Centuries – pivotal events. And always welcome. Give us a quantized measure of manageable progress. Like one part of a lo..ong project accomplished. Or like completing one cycle of an endless process. Would we like to compare with the earth going around the sun? Maybe not a good idea. A century taking 365 days to complete. Or maybe compare to Victor Trumper and Don Bradman and Majid Khan – getting a century in the very first session of a test match. Today 23rd January ’22 is the one hundred and twenty-fifth birth anniversary (born on 23rd Janunary, 1897) of our great leader Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. On this occasion as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose we listen a song from the recent movie ‘Gumnaami’ (2019).
I watched this movie on OTT platform last week and would like to mention here or rather I would like to request that every Indian should watch this movie. I think this movie was made in Bangla and Hindi language. The version available on OTT is the Bangla version. But major part is in Hindi and English so anybody can easily understand this movie.
The movie is based on the Mukherjee commission findings and the research movement taken by Mission Netaji and the later events.

Hullo Atuldom
21st January – the 57th remembrance day of the lively, lovely Geeta Bali – of the mischievous eyes and smile.
She was born Harkirtan Kaur in Amritsar and began her career at the age of 12. Her first adult role or heroine role came in 1946 i.e. at the age of 16. The film was ‘Badnaami’. Her popularity came with ‘Baawre Nain’ in 1950. She was seen in about 80+ films in her short career which ended with her untimely death in 1965.
