‘Sparsh’ (1980) was Sai Paranjpye’s first feature film. Besides directing it, she wrote the story, screen-play and dialogues. At the time of making of the film, she faced enormous problems at every stage – from the selection of actors to the submission of the film’s final print to the Central Board of Film Certification and then to the Feature Film Jury of the National Film Awards on due date. And if I go by what the director of the film has revealed through her interviews in newspapers and periodicals and also in her Marathi book, ‘Sai – Maaza Kalapravaas’, the major obstacles came from the producer of the film – Basu Bhattacharya, who was known in Hindi film industry as a stingy producer.

During the course of my exercise to pick up Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have gone through many Bangla films with their basic details such as the director, story writer, star cast, lyricist, music director, playback singers etc. In the list of lyricists in any Bangla film, if I find the name of the lyricist from Hindi films, I am almost certain that there would be at least one Hindi song in that Bangla film. In some cases, I found that though the name of the Hindi film lyricist was not mentioned, still one or two Hindi songs were found in such Bangla films.

I am reminded of Halley’s comet when I started writing this post. Relevance and context. . .?
Well, as they say…. samajhne waale samajh gaye hain
Anyway, coming to this unique post, all I can say is that I was surprised when I was asked to go ahead with the song by none other than Sudhir ji. There is some email interaction happening between self, Atul ji and Sudhir ji on another topic. In this interchange of emails and out of the blue, I was suggested to take up today’s “song”.

The days were when gramophone instruments and radios used to be a luxury. People could (and would) listen to music and songs either at family functions and weddings where a gramophone player was part of the arrangements, or in cinema halls, or maybe at restaurants and corner shops. But then still, the awareness and popularity of the songs and the artists was evidently widespread. The gramophone records of popular songs would sell out briskly, and there are many cases of a 2nd, and a 3rd edition of records being released by the companies. Word of mouth was a strong method of spreading awareness, and people used to hum and lightly sing the popular songs as they went about their work. One reads about this phenomena in anecdotal references in newspapers and magazines – like such and such song being on the lips of ‘everybody’, or such and such song being played in every street and lane – ‘गली गली में बजता था’.

Hindi songs in Bangla Films: 27
—————————————–
One of the many Bangla films in which Uttam Kumar paired with Supriya Devi was ‘Bilambita Loy’ (1970). The film was directed by Agragami. The star cast included Uttam Kumar, Supriya Devi, Nirmal Kumar, Deepa Chatterjee, Asit Baran, Tarun Kumar, Bimal Mitra etc. I have watched the film with English sub-titles on an OTT platform. The film’s English sub-titles are not as good as they ought to be. They are also not properly synchronized with the scenes. Within these limitations, I could make out the story of the film as under:

In the Indian film industry, it is very difficult for a producer and director to balance their ideals with money making in a film. Very few film producers have become successful in producing films combining the social purpose with commercial consideration. Prabhat Films and its director, V Shantaram was one of the earliest examples who produced and directed socially purposeful films like ‘Duniya Na Maane’ (1937), ‘Aadmi’ (1939), ‘Padosi’ (1941) etc. Fazli Brothers – Hasnain and Sibtain successfully produced and directed Muslim reformist social films like ‘Qaidi (1940), ‘Maasoom’ (1941), ‘Fashion’ (1943) etc. One of the risks of producing reformist social films is that of the backlash such films may face from the fanatics in religious groups. Hence, the commercially minded producers, by and large, avoided producing such ‘reformist’ films.

Maangne Se Jo Maut Mil Jaati
Kaun Jeeta Is Zamaane Mein
Lata ji’s voice is so truly a match for the sadness oozing from this song, that seems to be so steeped in dejection and sorrow. The film – ‘Sunehre Kadam’ – the last one in Hindi cinema that he composed for in 1966. And as if this expression was not adequate, the film also has another equally melancholic song to match the depths of misery – “Na Baaz Aayaa Muqaddar Mujhe Mitaane Se”.
Bulo C Rani – music director, whose talent was never in question, and yet, in his career he stayed forever, in the sidelines and under the shadows of the bigger names in film. We celebrate his 99th anniversary of birth today, 6th May.

Another wonderful discovery, another song that I had never heard before. The film is ‘Zindagi’ from 1956. The music composition is by Mohammed Shafi.
Mohammed Shafi is the name I was trying to get to also, on 30th April, which is the remembrance day for him. After getting the post in place for C Arjun that evening, I was not able to pull together this post, for remembering Mohammed Shafi Sb.
Once again, another very talented music director about whom, not much information is available. After much searching, I am able to locate a very brief article by a gentleman named Qaseem Abbaasi on the web site ‘Apnaarchives.org’. I am including some details from that article in this post.
