Today(25th may) happens to be the seventh death anniversary of Sunil Dutt (6 june 1929-25 may 2005). Born Balraj Dutt, Sunil Dutt was one of the earliest Radio Ceylon announcers before he got his break in Hindi movies in “Railway Platform” (1955).

During 1960s and 1970s, the quality of public involvement with movies and music tended to be of a higher level than what it is now. Movie magazines those days used to give reports on the progress of movies that were under production. Once the movies were released, magazines would give a summary of the story of the movies as well as their reviews. Not just that, books would be published that would give the detailed screenplay of movies.

‘Yaasmeen’, a film from 1955 is well known for some wonderful gems coming from the pen of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music composition by C Ramchandra. The film has ten songs out of which four are already represented on this blog, including the evergreen iconic rendering of “Bechain Nazar Betaab Jigar” by Talat Mehmood, and “Mujh Pe Ilzaam e Bewafaai Hai” by Lata Mangeshkar. “Baazi” (1951) was a Navketan International Films Production. It was directed by Guru Dutt. The movie had Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, Nirmal Kumar, Kalpana, Rashid Khan, Johnny Walker, K. N. Singh, Abu Baker, Roopa Verma, Krishna Dhawan, Habib etc in it.

Talat Mehmood is today mainly known for the songs that he sang in Hindi movies. But he began his career as a non film singer. He had gone to Calcutta in late 1930s when he was still a teenager and he began to create waves there with his ghazals.

I first became aware of Prem Dhawan in 1970s as the lyricist of the immortal patriotic song Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai baseraa from Sikandar e Azam. This song was composed by Hansraj Bahl. Subsequently I got to hear a few more songs which were written by Prem Dhawan and composed by Hansraj Bahl. Then I became aware of “Shaheed” (1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970), where Prem Dhawan was the lyricist as well as the music director. And what nice song these two movies had !

“Nirmohi”(1952) is an obscure movie by now. From the little information available about this movie, one can see that the movie was produced by Sheetal M and directed by Baij Sharma. The movie had Nutan, Sajjan, Raj Mehra, Leela Misra, Chaman Puri, Neeru, Amarnath, C. L. Kavish etc in it.
