In September 1988, Doordarshan National channel started telecasting what was to become the stupendously popular serialization of the renowned epic ‘Mahabharat’. And for a period of almost two years (94 Sundays), an audience of almost 20 crore Indians would be glued to the TV sets. And in every episode, the audience was greeted with the rendition of the title song and shlokas, and the every episode was bid good bye with a verse that summarized the story, the state of affairs, and the learnings from the particular episode. These opening and ending title song and verses came through the telecast riding on the booming voice of the one and the only singer who could have made the impact with his voice. His rendition of the opening word ‘Mahaaa-Bhaaarat’ is now etched in the aural memory of the viewers. The voice that had the power to shake a thunder. Mahendra Kapoor – the only voice that could make it happen.

“Tawaif” (1980) was a produced by R C Kumar and directed by B R Chopra for Sunrise Productions. the movie had Rishi Kapoor, Rati Agnihothri, Shammi , Ashok Kumar, Kader Khan, Poonam Dhillon, Deepak Parashar, Asrani, Sushma Seth, Iftekar, Achla Naagar, Sunita Singh, AshaLata, Shahikala, Arun Bakshi,Dev Malhotra, Deepak Sethi, Manjushree, Prabha, Ashok Sharma etc in it. The movie was based on a Novel “Bahut der kar di” by Dr.Masroor Alam.

In 1978, BR Chopra made this remarkable film ‘Pati, Patni Aur Who’. I call it remarkable because it is a rare occasion that the theme of marital infidelity is being dealt as a comedy. A happily married executive, wife of his liking through a love marriage, one child, and a comfortable household and life. What more can a man desire. Ah but yes, it is these ‘more’ desires of the man that are the thorn in the side.

“Blackmailer” (1959) is one of the more obscure movies of all time, it would seem. The only information that I am able to gather about this movie is that it was a Firdaus Films production and that it had Amar Nath, Shanta Kumari and Habib.

“Chaandi Ki Deewaar”(1964) was a Gee Aar Pictures production. It was directed by Dilip Bose. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Nutan, Indrani Mukherjee, Honey Irani, Sudhir, Naaz, Asit Sen, Pratima Devi, Misra etc in it.
