Pancham, the name by which that Rahul Dev Burman was affectionately called, was a name that was given by his father, Sachin Dev Burman. Once in an interview, RDB had revealed why Sachin Da called him by this name. He says that when he was born, and when Sachin Da heard him cry for the first time, he found that the pitch at which the newborn was screaming was the fifth octave of the sargam. And that is how he came to be known as Pancham. (There are other anecdotes also, crediting Ashok Kumar with naming him so.)

During my travels and trekking in the Himalaya, I have met some interesting personalities – from fellow travellers/ trekkers, drivers, guides, porters, villagers etc. I even had the company of Bhotia dogs during some of my high altitude treks. I remember that in 1986, a Bhotia dog accompanied me during the full 65 kms of trek from start to finish crossing a pass with knee deep snow. Fortunately, it was a round trek thus bringing the Bhotia dog back to his village.

The annals of Rajput clans date back to pre-Christ era, and the origins of the various dynasties are linked back into pre-history to the lineage of Lord Ram of the Suryavansh (Sun Dynasty). As per the chronicles of the Rajput dynasties, they trace their origins to Luv, the son of Lord Ram. “Aalingan”(1974) , though a recent movie by the standards of this movie is an extremely obsure movie. This movie was a low budget movie, which were then euphemistically described as art movie and they used to be made with out of work newcomers.
