When I had begun this blog, my grand vision was to discuss 2500 songs. I had thought that by that time I would have discussed all the Hindi movie songs that are worth discussing. When I finally reached that magic figure (on 29 may 2010), I found that I had just scratched the surface, as far as discussing the great Hindi movie songs was concerned and that many great songs were not yet discussed.

The movie “Toofaan Aur Diyaa” (1956) opens with this song as the credits roll on the screen. This song, in addition to being the movie opening song and the theme song, has to be one of the most inspirational songs of all time.

This song from “Shahanshah”(1988) wears many hats. this song is not only the movie opening song, this is also the theme song as well as the title song. In addition this song is also the introdution song that introduces us to the main character of the movie, viz Shahanshah, played by Amitabh Bachchan.

Songs play a very important role in the overall experience of a movie goer. Normally it takes a while before the first song kicks in. But there are occasions when the movie begins with a song. Credits are rolling in and a song is playing in the background. As the credit ends, so does the song, and the story begins in the right earnest.

Hindi movie songs are mostly about human feelings, viz love, sadness,happiness etc. As a kid, I was not much into such high sounding songs, especially sad/serious songs. I was more into fun songs.

Most of the songs discussed in this blog are from 1970s and earlier. By 1980s, deterioration in the quality of Bollywood songs had begun and the sun of the golden era of Bollywood music was on the verge of setting.

There are several songs that play at the very beginning of the movie as the credits begin rolling in on screen. I have not yet had a category for them, but I think I should call such songs as movie opening songs. They open the movie like how opening batsmen open an innings in a cricket match.
