Jaganmoy Mitra – that is the name behind the voice of such incredible gems as “Ye Na Bataa Sakoonga Main, Dil Ko Hai Tum Se Pyaar Kyun”, “Aankhon Mein Basaa Mann Hai Mera, Mann Mein Basaa Kaun”, “Meri Aankhen Bani Deewaani” , “Sapnon Mein Mujhko Pyaar Milaa”, and so many more non-film and film songs, that will never fail to tickle the heart and move the listener to feel the emotion behind the words. For more than seven decades, the treasures of his voice have pleased discerning listener’s of many generations. A voice that always kept to classical and semi classical consistency, and then faded away from the mainline singing for films, around the mid 50s. Yet, his popularity has not waned. Limited maybe, the treasure of his singing gems, but his name evokes a pleasant attachment, whenever his songs are played.

Remembering Jagmohan ‘Sursagar’ on the anniversary of his birth today (6th September).

Today is the 15th of August ֠a date that has a very special meaning and significance for all Indians, wherever they may be in this world. For it was on the 15th of August 1947 that India got its independence from British rule.
This date is therefore understandably celebrated by Indians. It is a national holiday in the country too.

Ah, the crisp voice of Kamal Barot. A sound that is so unique, and then so attractive, in certain scenarios. Granted that this voice may not exhibit as wide a range as some of her more successful peers, but the concern also works the other way round. That the voice, and some more like hers, did not get enough opportunity to develop more. We do find examples of her songs in all genres – except maybe having sung some sort of a cabaret song for Helen. Alas, it was an era dominated by few. And maybe that is what life is about – circumstances and relationships many a time define success, more than talent does.

I have been going through the biographies and profiles of some of the well known Urdu poets – Mirza Ghalib, Ibrahim Zauq, Mir Taqi Mir, Daagh Dehlvi, Majaz Lucknawi, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Josh Malihabadi, Jigar Moradabadi etc. Most of them had faced prolonged pains and sufferings due to certain events that had happened in their lives. It is said that shaayars’ personal pains and sufferings bring the best shaayaris as these are born out of their first hand experiences. The lovers of ghazals still remember the poignant and melancholic ghazals of Ghalib, Mir, Firaq, Jigar etc.

Geeta Dutt was one of the few singers who got a godsend opportunity as a playback singer in Hindi films. The devdoot or farishta (angel) in her case was none other than Pandit Hanuman Prasad, one of the music director of the 40s. While walking on a Mumbai street, he heard a singing voice coming from the balcony of the building above him which attracted his attention. He straightway walked into the room and found a teenage girl singing. She was Geeta Roy as she was known then. He liked her singing so much that he offered her the chance to sing a predominantly chorus song in the film ‘Bhakt Prahlad (1946) in which she had two lines to sing. These two lines from the song attracted the attention of S D Burman who persuaded her parents to let her sing in ‘Do Bhai’ (1947). The iconic song “mera sundar sapna beet gaya” and the box office success of the film signalled the arrival of Geeta Roy as a playback singer. By the end of 40s, she had already attained the status of one of the prominent female playback singers of Hindi films.

I like to do things methodically. Whenever I have to write an article on a song, I first go through all the comments on the already posted songs of that film, if any, so that I do not repeat what has already been said. Further, if needed, I can quote from those comments. If it is a singer, actor or a film, I try to go through the available material-on the Blog or Net etc, to make my write up exclusive and I also ensure that whatever statements I make in my articles are defendable with evidence-if and whenever challenged. All this can add to the quality and credibility of the material provided and avoids repetition so that the article may not end up as an ” Also Ran “.
