Today (21 september) is the birth anniversary of Allah Wasai, popularly known as Noorjehaan (21 september 1926- 23 december 2000). She bagan her career in early 1940s as a child artist and soon graduated into adult roles as an actor-singer. She was at her peak when partition happened and she went to Pakistan, leaving the field of the leading female playback singing of Hindi movies up for grabs.

In my native place in Mangalore district (and perhaps other places in India specially in villages), it was a tradition in almost every house that all family members would assemble in the Pooja Room soon after the dusk for singing some devotional songs. In a joint family system, this tradition also worked as a means of creating bonding among large family members. After shifting to Mumbai in early 50s, with a nuclear family and a city culture, this tradition slowly got discontinued. But my mother would sing at least a couple of devotional songs every day after dusk while doing her kitchen chores. One of the devotional songs which I had often heard in my childhood was in the Konkani language, my mother tongue. I was very much impressed by the lyrics and the tune of the song.

“Village Girl” (1945) also known as “Gaaon Ki Gori”, is a movie which was a Ramneek Productions movie. It was directed by K Amarnath, who had also written the story and the screenplay of the movie. The star cast of the movie included names like Noorjehan, Nazir, Jagdish Sethi, Mishra, Shanta Patel, Ibrahim, Nawaz, Chandrika, Ghosh, Durga Khote, Rama Shukul, Ananth Marathe,Rajkumari Shukla, Bikram Kapoor, Geeta Nizami, Rajkumari Kapoor, Ghulam Rasool, M.A. Khan etc.

“Zeenat” (1945) is a movie that is directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. This movie had Noorjahaan, Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Cuckoo, Shashikala (then a child), Baby Khursheed (later known as Shyama) etc. In fact, this movie seems to be a movie with mainly female actors . : D All the eight songs of this movie have been sung only by female singers, and that includes an all female qawwaali (Aahen na bharin shiqwe na kiye ).

“Khandan” (1942) ,a Dalsukh Pancholi production, was one of the biggest movies in Hindi movie industry when it was released in 1942. This movie was inspired from the movie “East Lynne” (1931) which in turn was based on a 1861 novel of the same name written by Ellen Wood. This movie dealt with a topic that was considered quite sensational at that time.

In this blog, I have been discussing Sajjad Hussain’s compositions these days. I have covered nearly 40 % of all the songs that he composed in Hindi movies and finding the remaining songs is becoming a tall order as they are all rare songs, not easil available. So every day I wonder where my next Sajjad Hussain song will come from.
