Here is a superb “party song” from “Anita” (1966). I wonder if this should be called a cabaret song as well. It seems that the dance was supposed to be cabaret but the costumes of the dancers is very much that of classical dancers.

“Chhote Nawab”(1963) was a movie that was Mehmood’s home production and he acted as the hero in this movie. The biggest contribution of Mehmood in this movie was introducing R D Burman as an independent music director.

In Bollywood movies, action takes place mostly in India where everyone speaks Hindi/Urdu. But sometimes the action would take place in the Western counttries as well. There, even the Westerners would speak Hindi/Urdu and the western cabaret dancers would sing a cabaret song full of words like “ishq”, “husn” “haseena” etc. I suppose words like “blonde”,”bombshell” etc were not in use in West those days. 😉

As sad songs go, this song must rank among the saddest and most poignant. Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics sum up the situation with the force of a well oiled sledge hammer. Hemant Kumar’s voice conveys tha pain of the protagonist so well that listeners cannot help but be moved even today, more than six decades later.

I keep confusing among movies with names like “Pyaar Muhabbat” “Jawaan Muhabbat” “Pyaar Deewaana” etc. With great difficulty, I remind myself that one had Dev Anand, and another had Shammi Kapoor, and yet another had Kishore Kumar. Now which movie had which actor is something I cannot recall with any certainty.

When someone talks about “Black Cat”, one thinks of the well armed special protection group commandoes who protect VVIPs of India. But long ago in more laidback days, black cat only meant what it literally means, viz ‘kaali billi”, the small domesticated cat which, if it crossed your way, was considered inauspicious (for you, not for the cat itself).
