The association of Pankaj Babu and RC Boral starts from their coming together as artists and producers at Calcutta Radio. No specific dates are available, but the expected period is the second half of the 1920s. This period also coincides with the prime of the silent films in India. Calcutta had become a main production center. Being recognized as music directors at Radio Calcutta, it was natural for RC Boral and Pankaj Mullick to be called upon for creating the orchestral music for silent films. In the days of soundless films, the music and sound effects were presented live in the theatre, using a live orchestra. What we recognize as background music today, was very much a ‘foreground’ entity in those years. The mood and the action on screen, was duly accompanied by live music that was played by the orchestra sitting just below and front of the screen. Probably no recordings of such musical works were made, else that in itself would have been a very valuable treasure for lovers of film music. wo films from 1931 are identified as the ones for which this pair had prepared the orchestral ‘foreground’ music. Produced by International Filmcraft, the title of the films are ‘Chesher Maye’ (‘चेशेर मेय’) and ‘Chorkanta’.

The first song contributed by her that appeared in the blog was Do dil toote do dil haare (Heer Raanjha)(1970). This was followed by Aap yoon faaslon se guzarte rahe (Shankar Hussain)(1976). The third contribution was Ab to hai yumse har khushi apni (Abhimaan)(1973).

A few days ago I heard this song on my mobile. There is huge collection of songs, come from where in my mobile I do not know. When the instrument was new, my daughter was trying out all functions in it. She has downloaded many old songs. This has to be one of them. For one born in 1990’s the 1970’s songs are old. I am getting to know what songs are there only now, since I thought to make use of the cache.

These people forget that in the so called ” advanced” world of Hollywood, even today,Mythological,costume and Historical films are regularly produced. Only thing is that these films are no longer advertised on the same scale as was the case a few decades back.

A most versatile character actor. Well, not completely feasible, given his short stature and a thin voice. “Kahaani Kismat Ki” (1973) was produced and directed by Arjun Hingorani, who pioneered the use of movie titles beginning with the letter K. Unlike those who came in late (read Ekta Kapoor), he would have three word titles, and each word would begin with K. Apart from “Kahaani Kismat Ki”, his other titles read “”Kab Kyun aur Kahaan” (1970), “Khel Khilaadi Ka” (1977), “Kaattilon Ke Kaatil”(1981) and “Kaun Kare Kurbaani” (1991). Clearly the letter K was lucky for Arjun Hingorani.
