The film titled ‘Baadshah’ (1964) was produced under the banner of Navkala Niketan, with Dara Singh and Nishi in lead roles. The film is a costume action drama, set in an unspecified time period, with all the regular components of palaces, kings, court dances, royal intrigues, and since Dara Singh in the hero – it also has feats of strength and hand to hand combat.

Another wonderful song pulled out from memory, and another as yet unknown film (to me) discovered. Awaara Abdullah is a film released in 1963 by Henna Films, Bombay. The direction is by Tara Harish, a name that is unfamiliar. It sounds like a joint name of two people, but I could be wrong.

While looking at the picturisation of this song, I wondered why this song does not qualify to be called a Mujra song. As it is, Mujra songs are those songs where the clients are ordinary folks or spoilt nawaabs. If the same dance is performed in a royal court, it becomes a royal court (Rajdarbaar) dance.

“Shokhiyaan” (1951) was a movie produced by Ambitious Pictures. Kidar Sharma was the director. The movie had Premnath, Suraiya, Jeevan, Kamlesh, Achla Sachdev, Rajendra Vyas, Ramesh Sinha, Nazira, Shanta Kanwa etc in it.

“Shokhiyaan” (1951) is a by now obscure movie. this movie was produced by Ambitious pictures and directed by Kidar Sharma. Cast of the movie included names like Nazira, Shanta Kanwar, Premnath, Suraiya, Jeewan, Kamlesh, Achla Sachdev, Rajendra Vyas, Ramesh Sinha etc.

The 1965 movie, Luteraa, is a typical pirates movie, with an esteemed star cast that includes Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The story is about two brothers who are separated as children. Prithviraj Kapoor plays the role of the elder brother, who grows up to be the leader of a pirate group. Dara Singh also grows up to be a sort of vigilante who operates as a loner. Hiralal is a king, and Nishi is his daughter, the princess. Jeevan is the Wazir in the court of Hiralal.

“Saugandh”(1961) was directed by G K Ramu for Hariharan Films, Madras. The movie had Anjali Devi, Gemini Ganeshan, M. N. Nambiar, P. S. Veerappa, M. N. Rajam, Kamala Laxman, M. Saroja, P. S. Venkatachalam etc in it. From the cast, it looks like a South Indian movie dubbed in Hindi and its original songs translated and recorded in Hindi.
