This song is from an obscure movie called “‘”Bairam Khan” (1946). This song is sung by not one or two or three, but four female singers ! This song is sung by Geeta Dutt (then Roy), Shamshad Begam, Naseem Begam and Munawwar Sultana.

The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.

I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz love, sadness, happiness and not about commerce/business. In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. When the name of Ghulam Mohammed is mentioned, the mind conjures up the classical and semi classical sounds and rhythms, foremost from Pakeezaah and then from many other movies like Shamaa, Mirza Ghalib, Laila Majnu, Dil e Nadaan, Shaayar, and other such movies. And so it is a surprise to come across lighter songs and foot tapping numbers that have been composed under his baton. On first hearing, if the details are not known, one can easily attribute these songs to OP Nayyar or Shankar-Jaikishan, Chitragupt etc.

“Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) is one of the earliest movie of Shammi Kapoor. In this movie he is paired opposite Madhubala. By that time, Madhubala had already carved a niche for herself whereas Shammi Kapoor had yet to discover his niche.
