The Many Colors of Love #4 — Romance in Golden Years
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
And so wrote the scribe. . .
These first four words make an instant identification to this fabulous song that needs absolutely no introductions. The song made immortal, not just by Sahir-Ravi-Manna Da, but more so by the performance of Balraj Sahni (as Lala Kedarnath) on screen, with a coy Achla Sachdev (as Laxmi Kedarnath) getting all bashful and pink in face, realizing what a display of romanticism has been unleashed by ‘Lalaji’. A song that eventually became the signature performance for Balraj Sahni. And over the decades, the song has steadily grown on the collective minds of the people and assumed a cult status as the banner song for golden age romance. Yes, I hear this song played often at silver and golden anniversaries of marriages.

This is the Rafi-Asha duet recorded for Neela Akash(1965) but not used in the movie. It is a shame that such a song could not find place in the movie and was relegated to anonymity. Some might say that the other songs used in the film were better than this so this was edged out. But I do not agree.

There are ways of discovering wondrous songs now. Radio was the main source where we heard old movie songs. Then for newer songs we had cassette players and C D players and also T V. With the accessibility of internet, I do not need any thing else to listen to songs but my laptop and net connection.

The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.
