The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.

“Benazir” (1964) was produced by Bimal Roy and directed by S Khalil. The movie had Ashok KUmar, Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor, Tanuja, Nirupa Roy, Tarun Bose, Lata Sinha, Asit Sen, Paul Mahendra, Durga Khote, Bela Bose etc in it.

Searching for and finding rarities in the world of music, is a keen and interesting pursuit. The Hindi film songs have so many variants attached to their existence. Songs that appear in film, but are not released elsewhere. Songs that are on records but not included in the film. Version songs – the official song in the film and on the record, is also available on record in the voice of a different singer. This case is different from the same song sung by more than one singer and included in the film. Then we have the variations between the song published on record and the song as picturized in the film.

Prima Facie, it would appear that most Shammi Kapoor style movies starring Shammi Kapoor had music by Shankar Jaikishan. But that is not really the case. There have been several music directors compositing music for Shammi Kapoor’s movies beginning from “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) when Shammi Kapoor finally came into his own.

This musical bandwagon continues to roll on unabated (touchwood !) and we continue to pass milestones at regular intervals.
Century of songs is the most basic and common kind of milestone for this song. In the earlier days of the blog, we just counted the number of songs posted in the day and every 100th song was a cause for celebration.

Today (5 august) is Salil Chaudhary’s death anniversary. Salil Chaudhary (19 november 1922- 5 september 1995) was one of the pioneers in the field of Hindi movie music. He composed music mainly in Bangla, Hindi and Malayalam movies and left his mark in movies of all three languages.

On independence day, we had the birthday of Rakhi. Three days later, it is the birthday of her husband. Sampooran Singh Kalra, known just as Gulzar, was born on 18 august 1936. Gulzar started his career as a lyricist in Hindi movies in early 1960s. He had written songs for “Shrimaan Satyawaadi” (1960),”Kabuliwaala”(1961),”Bandini”(1963),”Do Dooni Chaar” (1969) etc in his earlier years.
