Libaas (1988) the last film by Gulzar with Pancham as its music director didn’t get an official release. The film was shown at some international film festivals, but neither came into the theatres nor was it released on video or DVD. And that is rather a pity! Thus we are tricked out of our last treat of family drama by Gulzar. Well one can’t say family drama as we use it for Hindi cinema; it is more about an extra-marital affair.

Libaas (1988) didn’t get an official release though it was shown at some international film festivals. When asked about the film’s fate some ten years back, Gulzar played the ball into the producer’s court and feigned disinterest. Most probably it will never get released. All that we are left with, are the songs and some dialogues from the movie.

Ah yes, a surprise it is. This post is being written, as I am at the home of Khyati ji, in Fountain Valley, California. I reached here just earlier in the evening today, and Khyati ji and her husband, Jagdish Bhai picked me up at the airport. Folks may remember from an earlier exchange, that we had some specific plans for ensuring that we recognize each other, when we would meet for the first time at the airport (since we have never met before). But these plans did not work out, as planned. 🙂 I was supposed to be wearing a black trench coat, felt hat, and dark glasses, and carrying a red rose in my hand. And Khyati ji was supposed to be dressed like. . . well, without any description, I refer to the photograph she had shared in email.

“Chand Grahan” was a movie that was made sometime in 1970s but it never got released. It was only in 1997 that the audio of this movie were finally released. By that time the singer (Mukesh) as well as the music director (Jaidev) were no longer around.

Remembering Talat Mehmood (24 february 1924- 9 may 1998) on the anniversary of his birth today(24 february 2013).

The soft velvety voice that has lent itself to a wonderful array of musical creations, and made an indelible mark in the annals of Hindi film and non-film music. Whether the song is of happiness or it is of sadness, the first thing that comes to mind on hearing Talat Sb’s voice begin to sing, is a feeling of utmost comfort. A feeling that releases all other compulsions in the mind, and the mind wants to sit back and relax and just listen to this soft sound serenading the matters of heart.

One thing that we can depend upon for with Gulzar, is the most imaginative use of simple words that combine to make unusual arrangements, and still carry a very deep and pleasing meaning. A meaning that will always resonate in the mind, creating emotions of satisfaction, no matter whether the thread of feelings in the words is happy or sad. I have always been a great fan of Gulzar Sb’s poetry, the eminently simple verses that he creates to so lucidly express in such a few words, the emotions that one would be searching for words to make sense.

I have been an admirer of Gulzar’s films ever since I saw his film ‘Parichay’ (1972). I have seen all of his films released till 1982 and thereafter I have watched most of his subsequent films either on TV or on VCDs/DVDs. His films may not be a box office bonanza for film distributors but his ‘middle of the road’ films revolving around the intricate human relationship are a treat to watch for an audience of the good films.

“Nazrana” (1948) was an unreleased movie and hardly any information was available about this movie online. Not any longer. Our own beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh now has some invaluable information about this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:

Here is a song about which very little is known. This song is sung by Rafi and it is mentioned by a few YT uploaders that this song is from an unreleased movie of 1940s called “Nazrana”. Apparently C Ramchandra composed the music for this song.
