Fabulous Foot Tappers – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Goodness, more than 5 months since the last post in this series.  Starting in April, it was keeping a slow but regular pace till July, and then. . .

Anyways, back to one of my favorite genres – songs with a wonderful melody and a foot tapping beat that simply makes them irresistible hummers. One listens, and the mind simply wants to continue humming them, over and over again.  There are many such songs, and practically all of them are popular and well known. The thing that I am trying with this series is to locate the unfamiliar and less heard gems of this category, which have remained anonymous, mostly for the reason that they are from films that either did not get released, or films that remained obscure and unheard of themselves.

Genius of Jaidev – 29
—————————–

At last, “Mere DHIRaj ka badla SuDHIR-ji ne de hi diya.”

For quite a long time I was ignorant about this song except its mention in HFGK. Sudhirji, not only searched out the song for me, but also posted it on ‘YouTube’ to save my labour. I am going to thank him further, when as per his promise, he is going to colour-code the lyrics.

Today’s song is perhaps the first ever song of S D Batish that I am discussing here. Not that I avoided his songs or his songs were not good enough for me, but may be all his popular songs were already discussed here by others and I just did not get any of his songs for my purpose. It is purely a coincidence. Actually, I have lot of respect for S D Batish, who did a marvellous job of promoting Indian Music in UK and USA. He is one of the rare people who left the film world, but continued serving the Music by turning a corner in his life.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 1
————————————————-

I remember a very interesting scene from a film, seen long back on Doordarshan, whose name I am not able to recall right now.  The scene is in a moving train.  I think it is a Kishore Kumar film, but not very sure.  A person is selling ‘barfi’ in the train.  (‘Barfi’ is an Indian sweet made from milk and sugar).  He is carrying a tray full of barfi pieces, and is trying to catch the attention of the travelers, to sell and to earn.  He is not having much success.  He comes in front of Kishore Kumar, and a dialogue ensues.  Kishore asks him why should I buy this barfi from you.  The seller gives some very simple answers like it is good to eat and he needs to earn money.  Kishore tells him he will never be able to make a sale with such kind of answers.  Then he offers to make the sales pitch for him.  He conjures up a funny and interesting jingle about the barfi on the spot, and tries to catch the attention of fellow travellers, singing the jingle he has just created.  Of course he is able to make a lot more sales.  The seller is very impressed, and the two strike a friendship that lasts through the film.
