Missing Films of 1960s – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Let me explain the title and the intent of this new series.  This series is an outcome of the project that our dear Katie Ben from ‘saat samundar paar se’ has undertaken, after she got hold of the Geet Kosh volumes.  She zeroed in on volume 4, and she set about identifying all the films of the 1960s, that have yet to find a representation on the blog.  Specifically, the period covered is 1961 to 1970.  So she has very zealously pored through the fourth volume, page by page, film by film, and simultaneously kept on checking with the data on the blog.  The outcome of her effort is summarized as follows.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 24
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is not that Arvinder ji has requested this song loong back. His request is fairly recent. But he has been so consistently persistent that he has been reminding me at least twice a day (somedays even more than twice) to post this song. A song that has been in the memory for oh so long. But he could not find it anywhere on the internet and YouTube. When he checked with me a few days ago, I confirmed to him that yes, I have it. Then last week, it so happened that he was riding with me in my car, and I had the very CD in the player, that contains this song. When the song played, wow, the excitement on his face was something that has to be seen to be believed.

“Saaz Aur Aawaaz”(1966) was directed by Subodh Mukherji. The movie had Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu, Kanhaiya Lal, Padma, Niranajan Sharma, Asit Sen, Mumtaz etc in it.

This movie had nine songs in it. I was under the impression that all the songs of this movie were already covered in the blog, with the last song discussed in 2013 itself. Now it turns out that I had had failed in counting the songs of this movie. The fact that I had not discussed one of the songs from the movie was pointed out by H M Aparna, who takes her role of tagging YIPPEED songs very seriously and who often detects songs whose links were missing despite the songs being discussed in the past. Now she has pointed out a song from “Saaz aur Aawaaz”(1966) which I had actually failed to discuss and still I had painted the title of this movie orange declaring that all nine songs of the movie were discussed.

I am aware of the names of a few Hindi film names that have ‘Haathi’ in their title. The most famous of them being ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’. ‘Main Aur Meraa Haathi’, ‘Safed Haathi’ are two other such titles. Then there was another film having an Elephant as the central character in it which I watched in my childhood days and cannot forget (because of one of its songs – ‘maa tujhe dhoondhoon kahaan’) viz. ‘Maa-1976’.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 8
—————————————————–

दुनिया के बाज़ार में सब कुछ बिकता है, भगवान भी ।
(In this marketplace of the world, everything sells, even God.)

Here we have a small child who is selling God.  Well, not exactly.  He is selling small clay figurines of various Hindu Gods. This scenario is not unique to our country or this religion.  In every society across the globe, wherever there is a worship of a personal God with a form, one can witness such vendors who sell the prevalent and the accepted images of the Almighty.  Even in religions and faiths where the worship is of a formless God, and it is not possible to create images of Him, we have an abstract representation in form of words and scripts that replace the image. The concept and this need of the human mind to relate to a God like entity is and has been a powerful driving force for people across the ages and across the continents. Whatever may be the belief system, one will always find symbols or tokens or images or words, available to be purchased, for a price, at centers of worship and pilgrimage.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 17

The versatility of a writer, especially a song writer, is a direct reflection of his well rounded awareness and understanding of the many aspects of this life and the society that we live in.  Getting into the industry, and writing for the regular social and romantic themes is one level of expertise.  The next dimension to that is to move away from the conventional lines and create unusual verses.  Like the path breaking new sounds that RD Burman created in the 1970s.  An example of a neo+ song that comes to mind is the striking “Dam Maaro Dam” from the 1971 film ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’.  The theme and the expressions in this song, well reflect the then ongoing hippie ‘revolution’ that had swept around the globe, starting from west in the second half of 1960s, and making its way east, as an undefined quest.  The song represents the moods of rebel thoughts that drove this movement.  Taking in the changes that were coming along with the newer generations, Anand Bakshi wrote the simple lyrics of this song, that at one time, had become the signature beat for the hippie people.

Remembering Anand Bakshi, on the day of his passing away today (30th March).

The vast ocean of the Hindi film songs contains innumerable gems that lie hidden from the eyes, in the depths.  These gems, overshadowed by the waves of the popular melodies, more often than not, are even more endearing and more heartwarming than the popular tunes that capture the attention of the listening public.  And it is the true connoisseurs of this art that will delve into the deep to search out such gems.  It is these connoisseurs that value the sounds of the voices such as Suman Kalyanpur.

Greetings and best wishes to Suman Kalyanpur ji, on her birth anniversary (28th January).
