Today’s song is from a very old film-Bramhachari-1938.
When this film was released in 1938, it created a sensation, because the film’s debutante Heroine, Meenakshi Shirodkar had sung a song in a swimming pool donning only a one piece Swimsuit ! 85 years ago it was a very very daring and shameful act which would ‘spoil the young and the innocent’ children. The Traditional puritan society could not tolerate it. The film was made in Marathi and Hindi. When the Marathi version was released in Maharashtra, the ‘Sanatani’ section of the society of Poona protested by having an agitation in front of the theatre. Long articles criticizing this appeared in local papers and some people even threatened to go to the court, if these scenes were not removed from the film immediately. Conversely, these scenes also attracted huge crowds who enjoyed such scenes on the screen for the first time in a Marathi film !

Today’s song is from the film Aaj ka Hindustan-1940.
The second world war had already begun in 1939 and the British Government had promulgated many restrictions on the Indian people like rationing of food items. rationing of petrol and other essential items. As far as the Film industry was concerned, the Raw Film used to be imported as it was not yet made in India. The Government started a quota system for the filmmakers, based on a formula of films made in an year on average and many related parameters. This created problems for individual filmmakers who made films at random and had no studio of their own.

Today’s song is from the film Aap ki Marzi aka As you please-(1939).
The Talkie era started with the beginning of the 1930s decade, i.e. in 1931. By 1939, it entered the last year of that decade. Within the first 9 years, the film industry had shed its skin several times before beginning a new phase in the 40’s. Most artistes of the early Talkie era were those who came over from the Silent films. Many such artistes ended their careers while the remaining ones began ending their careers. While all this happened there were new entrants with their own new styles of acting.

In the mid-1930s, Fearless Nadia was making waves in the role of a stunt woman in Wadia Movietone films, ‘Hunterwaali’ (1935), ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ (1936) ‘Hurricane Hansa’ (1937) and ‘Lutaaru Lalna’ (1938). So, films in the genre of ‘action/adventure’ becomes one of favorites of many film producing studios. Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures also fell in line and made action/fantasy films around mid-1930s. Today’s song is from the film ‘Anaath Ashram’ (1937). This film was made by New Theaters, Calcutta.
During the period from 1931 to 1955. New Theaters was one of the premiere film production companies of India. This was not only a commercial organization, but also a school for developing new talents in the fields of acting, direction, cinematography, editing, sound recording, costume designing and other departments of film making. Almost all who learnt from here, became big names in their later careers. It was here that the artists were encouraged to become editors from cinematographers, and directors from editors. Names like Nitin Bose and Bimal Roy are enough to prove this point.
