I just came to know (thanks to information given by Khyati Bhatt) that today (9 september) is the birth anniversary of Leela Chitnis (9 september 1909 -14 july 2003). Leela Chitnis was born on 9 september 1909, and that makes her date of birth a perfect 09-09-09 whether you write it in the British style or the US style.

“Janmbhoomi” (1936) was a Bombay Talkies Production. Little is known about this movie today. I became aware of this movie thanks to a lovely song picturised on Devika Rani and a cute dog. I have been active on these websites for the last 3 years or so and I can say that not only has this brought back the memories of many songs after a gap of 30-40 years for me, but also brought to my notice some rare songs I was not aware of. I also became aware of some of the lesser known music directors, lyricists and singers. In fact, I had already created my playlist of such songs most of which have been covered in my articles for discussion in this blog.

I wonder if anyone has made a list of “Chakki” songs in Hindi movies. Present generation people may not be aware of a “Chakki”. “Chakki” was a manual rotaty grinder- a home appliance of previous generations which was used to grind grains. You poured grains on the hole near the centre of the “chakki” and rotated the “Chakki”. The grain got crushed and came out from the edges which was then collected.

“Chandidas” (1934) was a Hindi movie based on the tale of the medieval era Bangla poet who used to write poems on the theme of Radha and Krishna. That way, simplistically, he could be thought of somewhat like a male equivalent of Meera Bai, I suppose.

“Amrit Manthan” (1934) was one of the earliest Hindi talkie movies and easily one of the pioneering movies of its time. It was a Prabhat Films production. It was directed by V Shantaram. The movie had Chandra Mohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Sureshbabu Mane, Varde, Kelkar and Shanta Apte etc in it.

“Alibaba” (1940) was a Sagar Film Company movie. This by now forgotten movie was directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Surendranath, Sardar Akhtar, Ghulam Mohammed, Waheedan Bai etc in it. Waheedan Bai was the mother of Nimmi and Waheedan Bai’s elder sister Jyoti was married to G M Durrani.
