‘Subhadra’ (1946) produced by Prafulla Pictures, Bombay and directed by Vinayak, is a mythological film with the star-cast consisting of  Prem Adeeb, Shanta Apte, Meenakshi, Shantarin, Usha Mantri, Prabhakar, Majumdar, Ishwarlal, Yakub, Salvi, Jog, Daamu Anna Mavlankar, Nimbalkar and Lata Mangeshkar.  Three lyricists, Pt. Indra, Pt. Sudarshan and Moti BA, had written the songs of this film, and the music was set by veteran Vasant Desai.  It is a well-known fact that before becoming a full time playback singer, Lata acted in few Marathi and Hindi films for financial need to support her family.

I can not believe that this is my 500 th article on this Blog ! How time flies ! It seems just like yesterday that my first post appeared here. But it was 3 years 6 months and 11 days ago on 1-10-2012 that my first post had come up.

During my routine searching of songs online I came across this film title ‘Dhamki-1945’. And since there had been a film with this same title in 1973 which has already made an entry on the blog, this falls under one of my activities of bringing ‘films with similar titles’ to the blog (so far for the films released before 1980).

30th March happens to be a 65th Anniversary of Radio Ceylon. In the year 1951, this oldest Hindi Commercial Service had its first External service program broadcasted on 30th March.

Today (30 march 2016) is a red letter day for HFM lovers, though not too many people may be aware of it. It was on this day in 1951 that the Hindi commercial service of Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) started its broadcast. So today is the 66th anniversary of that Red letter day for music lovers.

SHANKAR PARVATI (1943) was a dance-based mythological film produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Aroon Kumar Ahuja and Sadhana Bose in the roles of Shankar and Parvati, respectively. Kamala Chatterjee, Mahipal, Bhagwandas, Brijmala, Reva Shankar, Narbada Shankar etc were the other actors. The film is not available in VCD/DVD.

Music and songs are integral parts of films made in the Indian sub-continent. Even before talkies came into being, musicians used to play musical instruments sitting close to the screen. Sometime recorded songs were played as film’s images got projected on the screen in the silent film era. The main reason as to why music and songs contents in films of Indian sub-continent are comparatively high as compared with those of films of other countries is that we are musically inclined people in our day to day life. Joy, sorrow, romance, seasons, activities, festivals etc are occasions for music and songs for us. Our folk music and songs are testimony to the importance of music in our life.

“Bhakt Pundalik”(1949) was directed by Dhirubhai B Desai for Shri Vishnu Cinetone Company, Bombay. The movie had Sushil Kumar, C J Pandey, Chunnilal, Kamlesh Thakar, V Mehrotra, Anupam, Shivlal, Rani Premlata, Sofia, Saguna, Nazira, Baby Rambha etc in it.
