Today’s song is from the 1950 movie “Baseraa”. It was directed by Inayat for ‘Watan Pictures, Bombay’. This was a ‘social’ genre of movie as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-II (1941-1950).
Geet Kosh mentions Ramola, Heeralal, Veena Kumari, Roopmala, Chanda and Bhudo Advani as the cast of this movie. Six songs are mentioned in Geet Kosh leaving blanks after that indicating that there might be more songs in this movie whose details are not known. Today’s song is from a family drama social film- Ghar ki Laaj-1941.
The film was produced and directed by V.M.Vyas, for his own banner- Sunshine Pictures, Bombay.The music was by an old-timer, Annasaheb Mainkar, but I find that in this film, he tried to adapt to the changing styles of the film music of the times !. The cast of the film was Shanta Hublikar, Nazir Ahmed, Jagdish Sethi ( in the credits, his B.A. is written prominently), Kalyani, Kaushalya, Majid, Daya devi (mother of actress Kaushalya, in real life), Hadi etc.

“Veeraanganaa-1947” was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Laxmi Productions, Bombay. This was a movie from the genre of “historical” movies. The cast of this movie included Shobhana Samarth, Prem Adib, Jeewan, Prabha, Badri Prasad, Sankata Prasad, Shanta Patel, Kanta and others. This movie has eight songs as per Geet Kosh-Vol-II (1941-1950). Kavi Pradeep wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie under the name of Miss Kamal. The singers’ names for all the individual songs are not mentioned against the songs of this movie. Hari Prasanna Das and Manna Dey were the two music directors for this movie. Taqdeer-1943 was specially made for facilitating the Debut of Baby Rani aka Baby Fatima aka Nargis, the only daughter of Singer, actress, Director, Producer and Music Director of early Talkie films – Jaddan Bai. Father of Nargis was a Hindu converted to Islam and from being a Muslim, Nargis got converted to Hinduism before her marriage to Sunil Dutt, with a brand new name “Nirmala Dutt”. Thus a circle was completed from her Nani Daleepabai, who hailed from a Brahmin family to Nirmala Dutt – wife of Sunil Dutt, a Mohyal Brahmin (a sub caste of Saraswat Brahmins). It is said that before marrying Mohan Babu (father of Nargis) Jaddan bai also had changed her name to Jaya Devi Tyagi. However due to Muslim community pressure Mohan Babu had to convert to Islam and become Abdul Rashid.

When I have no specific song or a film in mind to write about, I scan through the HFGK or the index of Film titles. When a name creates curiosity or interest, I go to the HFGK for details. My first choice is a singer whose style and songs I like. The second point is the Mukhda of the song to get an idea of the song. If these things evoke some feelings in me, I go through the later steps- like to find out if this is still not yet posted on the Blog, whether it is available on YouTube and if it is in full length etc etc.

Today’s song is from a totally unknown film Krishna Bhakta Bodana-1944.
This was a film made by Wadia Movietone, exclusively owned now by the elder brother J.B.H.Wadia, after the younger brother left this jointly owned company, to start his own outfit. Being a Gujarati Parsee, no wonder Wadia wanted to make a film on a lesser known Gujarati Saint to attract the Gujarati audience. The film was directed by J.B.H.Wadia himself – with a gap of 9 years i.e. after his last directed film Noor-E-Yaman-1935. In all he directed 15 films. His last film was Saaj aur Sanam-1971. During this 9 year gap period, he wrote film stories, produced films and did overall management of Wadia Movietone.
