Today’s song is from film ‘Jeena Seekho’ (1946). The film was made by Prabhakar Pictures, Bombay, which belonged to Bhalji Pendharkar, the elder brother of Baburaao Pendharkar – the hero of this film. Pendharkar brothers were quite big names in Maharashtra for film making. In fact, the whole clan of Pendharkar was connected with other famous people from film line, like Master Vinayak and V.Shantaram. Let us see how.

Today’s song is from an obscure film – ‘Jeb Katra’ aka ‘Pick Pocket’ aka ‘Girahkat’. The film may be obscure, but the song is extremely melodious and it is a pleasure to listen to such a song. I have liked it very much. The film was produced by actress-singer Brijmala’s home production Brij Prakash Productions. Looking at the cast of film and its director, it seems to be a stunt film. It was advertised as a Social Stunt film – whatever that means. To me it was like saying ‘a religious murder mystery film’ !

There will hardly be a person who has not seen film Mughal E Azam or heard about it. The film was famous and the man who made it – K.Asif – became known to all because of this film. However, K.Asif was not a prolific film maker. In reality, K.Asif (14-6-1922 to 9-3-1971) directed only two and half films. His first film was Phool-45, second was Mughal E Azam-60 and his last attempt was the unfinished film Love and God ( aka Kaiz and Laila)-1986. This film was released as an unfinished film by his kins on 27-5-1986, 15 years after K.Asif died. Asif had produced a film, ‘Hulchul-51’, but he did not direct it.

Today’s song is from film Naiya-1947. This social film was made by Mohan Pictures of Ramniklal Shah, which normally made C grade stunt films. The director was Aslam Noori and the music was by Anil Biswas. The cast of the film included Mazhar khan, Munawar Sultana, Ashraf khan, Anwar, Shehzadi, Suman, Balakram, Siraz etc etc. The film had 6 songs listed in HFGK, with record numbers. However it also indicates that there could be 3 more songs, about which no information is available. Lyricist’s name is not mentioned in HFGK,but I find that moviepedia.in mentions name of Aslam Noori – the director as its Lyricist also.

Today’s song is from film Ghar ki shobha-1944.

The history of Hindi Film Music (HFM) begins with the very first Talkie ” Alam Ara”-1931, in which there were 7 songs. Madan Theatres, Calcutta, Krishna Cinetone, Bombay and few other production houses were busy hectically in 1931, to release their First Talkie film, ahead of all others. Lucky Ardeshir Irani got the cake and released his film Alam Ara before all others and engraved his name in the history of Hindi and Indian talkies. Music and singing being an integral part of the Talkie films, many musicians were attracted to films. Stage and Drama musicians and some classical singers joined films and gave music in them. In those days, Film music was totally influenced by Gujarati, Parsee and Marathi stage and Drama music (Natya Sangeet). Probably no one ever imagined that there was a need for a different approach to Cine Music.

Today’s song is from film Bachpan-1945.

In the history of Hindi movies, there have been three films that had the title viz “Bachpan”. The first was of course Bachpan-1945, today’s film under discussion. The next one was made in 1963, in which Salim Khan- father of Salman khan and a member of the famous writer jodi of Salim-Jawed, was the Hero – opposite Menaka Irani. She was the eldest sister of the famous child stars Honey and Daisy Irani. She was also the wife of stunt film actor and director Kamran Khan. Their children are Choreographer and director Farah Khan and Compere cum director Sajid Khan. Incidentally Mrs. P.N.Irani was the mother of these Irani sisters and also the one who took away all their earnings.

Today’s song is from an obscure film ‘Ye hai Zindagi’ from 1947.

Very few people must have heard about this film. That is probably because, it was made in 1947- the year of India’s Partition. As the year 1947 began, news was circulating about the partition. Like many other industries, film industry was also worried. There was an air of uncertainty. Who will stay and who will migrate was hotly debated in the privacy of homes, studios and clubs. People looked at each others with suspicion. Muslims were worried about their safety in India, in spite of the assurances by Gandhi and Nehru.

Today’s song is from film “Saathi”(1946).

This title seems to be quite popular because, films with the same title were made in 1938, 1946, 1968, 1991 and 2005 as Saathi. Moreover one film called Saathiya was also made in 2002.

Mukesh song ” Dil jalta hai to jalne de” actually introduced me to the film Pehli Nazar-45. Being a Muslim social film, it was quite popular in Hyderabad, which was Nizam state, with a considerable Muslim population in it.

When the Fazli Brothers-the Director brothers- decided to make their first Muslim social film, ” Qaidi” in 1940, they were not sure how the purists in their religion would accept a film on Muslim life. But the director-Hussanain Fazli- was very firm that come what may, he would produce a Muslim social film. Just to be on a safe ground, he chose to make the film in Calcutta- far off from Bombay to avoid any resistance from the fundamentalists. The film was made by Film Corporation of India, Calcutta.

Writeup by Atul
————————–

This writeup marks a very special occasion for the blog. It is the 15000th writeup for the blog !

5000th and 10000th posts in the blog were major landmarks for us. The preparations, celebrations and enthusiasm for those posts were quite grand and memorable.

For instance, preparation for the 5000th post had begun in right earnest some more than 150 posts prior to the big event. The song was identified well in advance. That was a legendary song, created by rather unknown artists. So that post was meant to honour lesser known HFM artists.
