Today’s song is from film Shri Ganesh Mahima aka Shri Krishna Vivah-1950.

Mythological films have been my weakness from the beginning. When I was around 10-12 years of age, I would be a very happy, willing and enthusiastic escort to family elders-especially ladies, going for a Bhakti Pradhan film. What I liked in these films was the trick scenes and fantastic costumes. later on I realised these films also provided lot of religious knowledge in the formative years.

Today’s song is from film Zevarat-49.

” studio system ” as it is called, began as soon as silent films got established and were on fast track. Well established studios made films regularly and systematically. Each and every studio/ production house had a set of its own actors, directors and MDs. They were on a monthly pay roll. From the 1920 onwards, all major studios like Imperial, Kohinoor, Sharda, krishna, Saraswati, Paramount, Aurora, Barua, Aryan,British Dominion, Great Eastern, Laxmi pictures, Madan Theatres, Maharashtra film company, Prabhat, Ranjit, Saroj etc had their actors on pay roll. Studios were jealous about their stars and always ensured that they don’t leave them.

Today’s song is from a film Jeete Raho-49- a C grade action and stunt film.

” In every real man, a child is hidden that wants to play “- said German Philosopher Fredrick Nietzsche. As a child, one enjoys stories of valour, magic, superpowers and adventures. As an adult, the taste changes but what is etched in the core of mind, remains. That is why, when you see children playing Cricket or Football, you feel like trying your hand. When you see a Policeman catching a thief valiantly, you clap with glee. When you are alone you get lost in day dreaming. So on and so forth….

Today’s song is from an obscure, unknown film, Bhagya Laxmi-1944.

The film had a good star cast like, Shanta Apte, Prem Adib,Vasanti, Rajkumari Shukla, Jagdish Sethi, Moni Chaterjee etc. The few songs of this film, which I have heard make me feel that music too was good. ‘Proof of the Pudding is in its eating’-listen to today’s song and you too will like this very melodious song. Shanta Apte can not be called a very good singer- she was OK. But the Lyrics and the tune of the song has taken her voice to a new height. It is genuinely an excellent song indeed.

Today’s song is from film Hawai Khatola-46.

Whenever I come across a film starting with the word ‘Hawai’, I always remember film Hawai Daaku aka Bandit of the Air-1936, in which K N Singh was the Hero. His heroine was Ram Pyari and villain in the film was Mazhar khan. See the fate – in later years, Mazhar Khan became a Hero and K N Singh made his indelible mark as a sophisticated villain ! Incidentally, there were 7 films, starting with the word ‘Hawai’, if you are wondering about it. There were 2 films with the same Title ” Hawai Insaan “(The flying man), made in 1947 and 1965.

Today’s song is from film ‘Jeena Seekho’ (1946). The film was made by Prabhakar Pictures, Bombay, which belonged to Bhalji Pendharkar, the elder brother of Baburaao Pendharkar – the hero of this film. Pendharkar brothers were quite big names in Maharashtra for film making. In fact, the whole clan of Pendharkar was connected with other famous people from film line, like Master Vinayak and V.Shantaram. Let us see how.

Today’s song is from an obscure film – ‘Jeb Katra’ aka ‘Pick Pocket’ aka ‘Girahkat’. The film may be obscure, but the song is extremely melodious and it is a pleasure to listen to such a song. I have liked it very much. The film was produced by actress-singer Brijmala’s home production Brij Prakash Productions. Looking at the cast of film and its director, it seems to be a stunt film. It was advertised as a Social Stunt film – whatever that means. To me it was like saying ‘a religious murder mystery film’ !

There will hardly be a person who has not seen film Mughal E Azam or heard about it. The film was famous and the man who made it – K.Asif – became known to all because of this film. However, K.Asif was not a prolific film maker. In reality, K.Asif (14-6-1922 to 9-3-1971) directed only two and half films. His first film was Phool-45, second was Mughal E Azam-60 and his last attempt was the unfinished film Love and God ( aka Kaiz and Laila)-1986. This film was released as an unfinished film by his kins on 27-5-1986, 15 years after K.Asif died. Asif had produced a film, ‘Hulchul-51’, but he did not direct it.

Today’s song is from film Naiya-1947. This social film was made by Mohan Pictures of Ramniklal Shah, which normally made C grade stunt films. The director was Aslam Noori and the music was by Anil Biswas. The cast of the film included Mazhar khan, Munawar Sultana, Ashraf khan, Anwar, Shehzadi, Suman, Balakram, Siraz etc etc. The film had 6 songs listed in HFGK, with record numbers. However it also indicates that there could be 3 more songs, about which no information is available. Lyricist’s name is not mentioned in HFGK,but I find that moviepedia.in mentions name of Aslam Noori – the director as its Lyricist also.

Today’s song is from film Ghar ki shobha-1944.

The history of Hindi Film Music (HFM) begins with the very first Talkie ” Alam Ara”-1931, in which there were 7 songs. Madan Theatres, Calcutta, Krishna Cinetone, Bombay and few other production houses were busy hectically in 1931, to release their First Talkie film, ahead of all others. Lucky Ardeshir Irani got the cake and released his film Alam Ara before all others and engraved his name in the history of Hindi and Indian talkies. Music and singing being an integral part of the Talkie films, many musicians were attracted to films. Stage and Drama musicians and some classical singers joined films and gave music in them. In those days, Film music was totally influenced by Gujarati, Parsee and Marathi stage and Drama music (Natya Sangeet). Probably no one ever imagined that there was a need for a different approach to Cine Music.
