Today’s song is from the film Manmani-1947.
The film was made by Patel productions. It was directed by Sarvottam Badami and the music was composed by the great one from Bengal – Kamal Dasgupta. Kamal Dasgupta earned fame when he composed many NFS in Hindi and Bengali in the mid 1930 and the 1940s. These became very popular, but somehow his Hindi film music was not that popular, except for the films Jawab-1942 and Hospital-1943, out of the 16 Hindi films for which he gave music. His best song for which he will always be remembered was ” Ye duniya Toofan mail” from the film Jawab-1942. Kamal Dasgupta could not impress with his other film songs in Hindi. 1947 was, in any case, a testing period due to the commotion prevailing in the film industry of Bombay which was affected the most.

Hullo Atuldom
1st August is the date when Meena Kumari was born as Mahjabeen Bano.
She had a career spanning 33 years, starting as a child artist in 1939. At a young age of 5 she became the bread-winner of her family. Fans of Meena Kumari know that she went on to adult roles from 1946 when she appeared in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ & ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’. ‘Baiju Bawra’ & ‘Parineeta’ helped her gain prominence as an actress. Till the late 1950s she had acted in films ranging from drama to comedy to fantasy before “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahan”; “Main Chup Rahungi” & such other movies earned her ‘tragedy-queen’ sobriquet. Personally I liked her ‘chulbuli’ characters in “Miss Mary”, “Kohinoor”, “Azaad” etc.
