Long ago during weddings in the family, couple of my aunts who were fond of singing, would start this singing session, among ladies. There were a few peppy songs, but I am remmbering a couple of songs now like ‘chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar’ from Baabul’ (1950) and ‘baalam se milan hogaa sharmaane ke din aaye’ from ‘ Chaudhvi ka chand ‘. They would sing it in chorus in Shamshad Begum style. They probabaly had no inkling that the song from Baabul is a sad song, and song from ‘Chaudhvi ka chand’ is by Geeta Dutt.

When I saw the lyrics of this song from “Jogan” (1950), I thought that this song was discussed long back, but when I checked the list of songs of “Jogan” (1950) appearing in the blog, this song was missing much to my surprise. Then I realised that the song that I was confusing it with was the song Ae ri main to prem deewaani mera dard na jaane koye from “Naubahaar” (1952).

“Jogan”(1950) was a Ranjit Film Company Production. This movie was made at a time why the studio was on the verge of bankruptcy. This movie, based on a seemingly flimsy looking story line rescued the company. Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:-

“Hanste Aansoo” (1950) was one of the first Hindi movies to get an Adult certificate from the censors. The reasons for getting A certificate those days used to be quite flimsy. For instance, “Barsaat” (1949) had become the first Hindi movie to get an A certificate. The reason why censors were provoked thus was that the female actors in the movies, viz Nargis, Nimmi etc are shown without dupattas and in one song there is even the talk of dupatta flying away in the breeze, viz. Hawa me udta jaaye mora laal dupatta malmal ka. 🙂 And the censors were righteously indignant about all this. 🙂

During 1948-50, Dilip Kumar-Kamini Kaushal was a much talked about lead pair having worked in ‘Shaheed’ (1948), ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ (1949), ‘Shabnam’ (1949) and ‘Aarzoo’ (1950). All these films were successful at the box office. Then why is it so that this successful lead pair did not work together in any films after ‘Arzoo’ (1950)? There is a story behind it but before that let me share Kamini Kaushal’s profile in brief which I found unusual and interesting. Some highlights of her profile including the reason for not working with Dilip Kumar after ‘Arzoo’ (1950) are given below:

“Jogan” (1950) was a Ranjit Film Company Production. It was directed by Kidar Sharma. This movie was a landmark movie in many respects.

Musically speaking, this movie was a musical blockbuster. As many as ten songs from this movie have discussed in the past and still we are not done with this movie. 🙂
