Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s
The second song in the series “Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s” is a duet of Asha and Manna Dey from the film “Baaghi Sipaahi”(1958).
By 1955, with great efforts and difficulties, Shankar Jaikishan came out of the rigouring influence and control of Raj Kapoor on their music compositions. Now they were free to fly high and be the “Numero Uno “.

“Baarish”(1957) was produced by K H Kapadiya and directed by Shankar Mukherji for Alankar Chitra, Bombay. The movie had Dev Anand, Nutan, Lalita Pawar, Helen, Anwar Hussan, Nana Palsikar, Jagdish Sethi, Mehmood, Kumkum, Gope, Madan Puri, Kumud Tripathi etc in it.

We are starting a New Series from today- “Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s”.
There was a Shankar-Jaikishan mania in the 50s and the 60s. They not only had popularity,versatility and flexibility but also unparallelled success. After Husnlal-Bhagatram, it was Shankar-Jaikishan pair who actually set the trend of composer duos in Hindi films. After Shankar-Jaikishan, no new solo composer, barring perhaps R D Burman,tasted such consistent success. Even R D Burman confessed that in the 1980s, he lost out to competition from duos everywhere.

With ASAD covering 11K + songs till date, finding a new song to present, also having a link/sound track to attach, becomes more and more involved/difficult task for a contributor. I am sure one of the simple joys for the contributors must be (I am only a new entrant to the tribe) to locate one. And, if it happens to be a popular song it is an icing on the cake.
Here I am with such a joyful find. Like others have expressed it at times: “How come this song has escaped being presented?”

Delhi is well lighted in the nights these days, so it is hard to come by a dark night unless it is a power failure on a moonless night. There are some songs you have heard, and there are some songs whose tune and credits you can also recall. You take note of songs (& hence remember or recall them) for various reasons. It could be because it touched or exhilarated you a lot, or it is by your favourite singer/MD/Lyricist or because of an occasion in your life you associate the song with.
