Today (28th may), which happens to be the birthday of music director Vinod gives me a good reason to discuss a few songs composed by him. Vinod, whose real name was Eric Robert was born on 28th may 1922 at Lahore. He came to Bombay in late 1940s alongwith Roop K Shorey. Vinod composed music in about 32 Hindi movies and a few Punjabi movies. He was one of the pioneers of Hindi movie music during its formative years. He was one of those who used western music as well as Hinglish lyrics in his compositions at a time when such compositions were not quite in vogue.

“Mukhda” (1951) is an obscure movie by now. It was a Shorey Pictures presentation. It was produced and directed by Roop K Shorey. The movie had Satish, Kuldip Kaur, Majnu, Neeta, Siddiqui, Kukku etc in it. I am surprised to note that the name of Meena Shorey, the wife of Roop K Shorey does not figure in the list of actors. The list of actors in the starcast could well be only partial.

Recently,I came across an audio clip of a film FOR LADIES ONLY (1951). This film was also known by the name ‘TITLI’. I had never heard of this film. A search in the Indian Film Trade website revealed that the film was produced under the banner of Jaimini Dewan Productions ( Jaimini was the brother of Karan Dewan) and directed by Vedi. The cast included Satish, Roopa Verman, Kuldeep Kaur, Sadhana Bose, Ramnath. As per the same website, there were three lyricists for the film – Sahrai, Kaif and Sahir Ludhianvi. Another website gives the names of six lyricist – Sharma, Vashisht,Prakash, Kaif, Sahrai and Sohanlal Sahir ( and not Sahir Ludhianvi). Vinod (Eric Robert) was the music director for the film.

Ever since I heard the songs from film ‘Badi Maa'(1945) about four decades ago, I have been a fan of music director Datta Korgaonkar (known as K Datta). It is stated that when his songs from ‘Badi Maa’ were heard by some of his contemporary music directors, they were so impressed by his compositions, especially ‘diya jalaaker aap bujhaaye’ that music directors like Shyam Sundar, Anil Biswas, Ghulam Haider and Rafiq Ghazanvi personally visited his house and congratulated him. During the last few days, I have been going through his songs on the internet and I found his compositions and orchestration of songs somewhat different from what was prevalent during his time. K Datta was active in the film industry between 1943-1956 during which time he composed music only for a dozen films but he churned out mostly good songs though they may not have become very popular among the masses. His last film as a music director was ‘Ajnabi’ (1966).

What a delightful song this is ! I have never heard this song before today. And luckily the picturization is as appealing as the audio. This is a stage song from film Ek Nazar, written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by S. D. Burman, master of duets in my humble opinion. The fact of this being a Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi duet is added bonus as i was looking for a duet by these two to discuss.

Greetings all for the celebration of Ram Navami today, the anniversary of the birth of Lord Ram. Ram is one of the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver and the Sustainer of this universe. Today’s celebration is one of the most ancient festivals celebrated in India. The date of Ram Navami can be traced back to the pre-Christian era. References to this celebration can be found in many of our scriptures. In Hindu religion, it is considered to one of the five major sacred festivals and it is said that, properly observing this fast leads to the attainment of salvation.
