When the year 1952 dawned, Geeta ji had been singing in Hindi films now for about 6 years, and had an incredible 500+ songs already behind her. On the other hand, the soon to be famous OP Nayyar had composed the background score for Kaneez in 1949, and this film, Aasmaan, was going to be his debut as an independent music director. He became known as a maverick composer and the Melody Maestro in the coming years. OP Nayyar went through a phase in the 50s when All India Radio shunned his music as being too trendy, and Radio Ceylon became the remote beacon for music lovers to listen to his songs. Hansraj Behl had a career in Hindi films that lasted from 1946 to 1979, and he was one of the more successful and popular music directors in the post independence years. Creator of many iconic songs in the 50s and 60s, Hansraj Bahl’s music has a semi classical touch, with roots in his earlier training in classical music. He has been a very active music director for Punjabi movies also, and there is a large number of very popular Punjabi films songs that are composed by him.

The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.

What a gem of a song ! Ghulam Mohammed at his melodious best. I am sure you will find yourself humming this song over and over after you have heard it once. That is what is happening in my mind as I am putting down the lyrics and preparing this write up, the leading lines just keep playing again and again in my mind – ‘chhodo chhodo ji piyaa mera todo na jiyaa’. What a lovely composition this one is.
