I had never heard about this movie called “Dil ne pukaara” (1967). And I may not be alone. This movie had Shashi Kapoor and Rajhshree in lead roles and I do not think this movie was any great shakes at the box office.

This philosophical song from “Upkaar” was one which Indeewar had written a few years earlier and Anandji ( of Kalyanji Anandji music director duo) liked it so much that he kept the lyrics with him. When a situation arose for this kind of a song in Manoj Kumar’s Upkaar, Kalyanji Anandji were ready with this song.

When one listens to this song, and finds out that Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors and Hasrat Jaipuri the lyricist, then one can safely assume that this Rafi song is picturised on Shammi. And indeed, I have thought so about this song for more than four decades. It indeed seems to fulfil all the ingredients that one had in a Shammi Kapoor movie.
