Hullo Atuldom

6th February 2022 followers of Indian music, across the genres of Bhav-geet, Film Sangeet, Bhajans and any other that we can think of, lost the most accomplished, sought after, loved (& any other add-ons that we know of) singer. She went by the name Lata Mangeshkar fondly addressed as Lata Didi by the multitude of her followers. She was the go-to voice (a modern day term for first choice) of all music composers for their debut films – remember ‘ghar aaja ghir aayi’ RD Burman, ‘Parasmani’ & its songs which was the first released film of Laxmi- Pyare. Even Madan Mohan is said to have approached Lata Mangeshkar to sing for his debut film ‘Aankhen’ but could get her into the recording room only for his next ‘ Adaa’ which released in 1951.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Maa Baap ki Laaj’-1946.

The film was made by Hind Pictures – owned by actor, director and producer Nazir Ahmed Khan. However, in this film, though he acted as the Hero, he did not direct the film. The film was directed by Nanubhai Bhatt. For Nanubhai this film was a ‘ hard to come by’ social film for direction, because he was known as a director for B and C grade stunt and costume films only. The cast of the film was Swarnalata, Nazir, Jayant, Kusum Deshpande, Majid, Gulab, Anwari and many others.

In this article, I have taken up for discussion, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1996) which was the first Hindi film produced by Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) after it commenced operations sometime in 1994. Before I discuss the film, it is necessary to dwell upon as to why Amitabh Bachchan felt setting up a film production and distribution company, how the Company fared and how the Company went into near bankruptcy. I think, ABCL is one of the appropriate case studies for the students of business management to understand what went wrong with ABCL and how Amitabh Bachchan turned the corner from near bankruptcy to the star of the millennium.

“Meri Bhaabhi”(1948) was a movie produced under the banner of Jubilee Pictures, Bombay. Very little information is available about this obscure movie. Names of producer, director, actors are not known. The number of songs in this movie is not known though it is known that the movie had at least four songs in it.

In my last article, I had made a passing reference to the film, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) in the context of the prelude music of one of the songs of the film which is the inspiration for the prelude music of the song that was discussed in the aforesaid article. This film suddenly reminded me of its director, Mansoor Khan who had successfully directed ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988) and some more. From his filmography, he directed his last film, ‘Josh’ (2000) and was the co-producer of ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ (2008). It is a rare instance for a film director who has successfully directed four films in a row and vanished from the film industry. It was an interesting quest for me to know as to why he shunned the film industry.

It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. This is a Chinese saying which teaches us that even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point; something which begins with one first step.

We in the blog have been following this saying without realising it. If one song post is considered one step, then we took our first step on 19 July 2008. Today (8 February 2024) is the 5683rd day for the blog. With this post we take our 18200th step. Or to be more precise, this post is the 18200th post for the blog. The figure of 18200 is quite a mind boggling figure, but we were able to achieve it without putting us under any pressure. We just kept covering a few songs every day, kept celebrating important milestones, kept enjoying the journey, and now, here we are.
