Writing with fervour and emotions on old films is like being a doctor with a very odd and unknown speciality, e.g. Medical geneticist, which is a very rare type of speciality. In the entire USA there are less than a thousand such specialists. Another odd speciality is Aviation Medicine. In the USA, there are hardly 500 such specialists. For a common man these specialities are a waste of time and these are not big income earners. Nowadays, everything is measured in terms of earning money. Liking and choice have no value. I am sure, in India specialists of the above two categories may not have marriageable values even !

Today, the 3rd of July is the 72nd birthday of Amit Kumar Ganguly, popularly known as Amit Kumar. Amit Kumar is the son of Kishore Kumar and Ruma Ganguly. Like his father, Amit started singing from an early age and he used to sing at Durga Pooja festivals in Calcutta. At one such function arranged by Bengali actor “Mahanayak” Uttam Kumar, the audience continued requesting encores. While his mother complained that he was singing “filmy” songs, his father decided to bring him to Bombay.

Today’s song is a duet from an 85 year old comedy film-Ladies Only-1939.
This film was made by Sagar Movietone. Sagar came up very fast in the film industry and then it got eclipsed also very fast within about 10 years. Starting with Sagar Film Company, it made 12 silent films. Its first Talkie film was Veer Abhimanyu in 1931. By 1940 , Sagar had made 52 Hindi films, 5 Tamil films, 4 Gujarati films, 3 Telugu films and 1 each in Punjabi and Bengali languages. Then it merged with National Studios and made 16 films under this banner.

Today’s song is from a social film “Pyaas”-1941.
Films with the title “Pyaas” were made in 1941, 1968 and 1982. Interestingly, there were 45 films having the word ‘ Pyas/Pyasa/Pyasi’ in its title as the first word. I always advocate that when a film is mentioned, for whatever reason, it is absolutely necessary that its year is also mentioned along with the title of the film. In Hindi films, it is a common phenomenon that many films with similar titles are produced in different years. I have quoted many times that a film titled ” Insaf” was produced 7 times in different years. Like the ‘ Same Name Confusion ‘ of film actors, a film itself can be a victim of ‘Same Title Confusion’ if the specific year is not mentioned.

Today’s song is from the film Apna Ghar-1942.
This film was the remake of the Marathi film “आपले घर ” (Aaple Ghar i.e. Our Home). Very surprisingly, it was made in both languages by Circo Production, a film company famous for making Hindi films. Usually, the bilingual-Marathi/Hindi films were made in Poona and Kolhapur by either Shantaram’s Prabhat Films or Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures at Kolhapur. But then, the owner of the CIRCO (Cine Industries Recording COmpany), Chimanlal Trivedi was a person exclusive in the industry.He produced films taking the best from the industry- actors, directors or the music directors. He floated 5 successful film companies and one stage drama company. He had close relations with the top political leaders of India. After his death, his entire family settled in the USA. There have been three posts today, by Avinashji, an ardent fan of the Panchamda a.k.a. R. D. Burman- a music director who was a favorite of an entire generation of Film Music lovers.
